Looking forward to Saturday. Shout out to all my fellow young pups who were not born the last time we played them.
Exeter are decent side IMHO. But do not feel they will finish in the top 6 . We get better as time goes on , we have good chance of a top 6 finish. As long as injuries and suspensions do not hurt us too much. I would like to see another striker to come in january.
Sadly I'm not one of the young pups who can DB. Old(er) 'uns like me will remember that in 1977, we were 3-0 at half time against them and yet lost 3-4 after a second half horror show.
That's just a reflection of where people have bet money, and doesn't show who is more or less likely to get promoted. If I had a grand on us today, we'd probably be in the top 4 on that list.
I once went down there to watch the Reds in the early seventies & had the pleasure in watching us get tonked 6 v 1 , it was at the time when you had to set off late on a Friday night to get there & not get back until the early hours of Sunday morning , I also got a crack on entering the ground by a skin head , happy days !!
I'm not liking this for the crack on the head obviously, nor the 6-1 defeat! Why did it take so long to get there, was it lack of motorways? Slower vehicles? Horse & cart?
Early 1970s they probably had to walk. Uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back too. Nothing but gravel to eat.
I was there during that great promotion run in 1981. I was living in Salisbury so made a point of going to all the southern based fixtures - Exeter, Plymouth, Pompey, Colchester etc. Always took the train, using my Forces Rail card which I think gave me half price fares Loved that trip down to Exeter, especially as it was such an easy run from Salisbury without any need to change. Behind the goal with no terracing if I remember and we saw a 1-0 win (Glyn Riley I think?). I just knew we were going up that season - the team had that unstoppable air about them. Could have been something to do with our chunky powerhouse at number four who just couldn't stop scoring, especially when he heard the Ponty roaring.
A lot of the M5 didn't exist so it was the A38 for a lot of the route - a cart track except for where it was a high street through many town centres
Slower vehicles was one of the reasons & of course there was no continuous motorway after the M1 . The supporters buses were supplied by Yorkshire traction & I remember on the trips to the west country to Plymouth , Torquay & Exeter the buses used to refuel at Bath plus the driver would have a rest period ,but there were journeys when two drivers were on board & they would rotate , happy days & there must be one or two contributors of a similar age to myself on the BBS who endured these trips as well as myself who also have fond memories .
That’s interesting. I spent around ten years of my RAF Service on Salisbury Plain between 1975 and 1986. Lived at Wilton, Old Sarum, Upavon and Boscombe Down. It was a wrench to leave the area and I’ve been back many times. I’ve always loved Salisbury and am a member of the Fisherton History group on Facebook. Members post lots of good stories and photos of the city. Where did you live and when did you leave?
