Heggem was a very decent attacking right back, the scousers loved him but he had hamstrings made of rice paper; retired in his late twenties after having not kicked a ball in anger for over two years. Don’t think he played over the age of 25.
Thought VDL was a good player especially under Bassett unlucky with foot problems (bunions) and a ACL finished his career.
I remember him (VDL) having long blond hair at Port Vale, but he was bald when he joined us lol. So just like Sampson, he lost all his strength when it was cut off.
It's often forgotten that Marco Materazzi played for Everton. I believe he still holds the Premier League for most red cards in a season with 3. Not bad considering he played fewer than 30 games.
Naah then. Being a youngling, I don't remember Van Der Laan as being owt but a baldie. A quick google images search has produced quite a shock (of blond hair) on photos of his Port Vale days!
Looked clumsy, slow and immobile but very effective in the most bizarre manner. I remember when Bassett stuck him up front against Blackburn and the way he roughed their defenders up was something else. They clearly didn't know what to make of him as we were 4-1 up after half an hour. He got injured in the playoff semi against Birmingham and missed the final. I reckon if he'd played we may well have won.
He was a very good player - he still goes to Liverpool games, saw a bit of an interview type thing. Apparently owns a salmon business back in Norway!
hiS injury against Birmingham was a catalyst to bring Dyer on eventually wasnt it? If Hignett had taken the penalty instead of Barnard we likely win
I've dwelt on that match ever since. Haven't watched it back. However, the Barnard penalty, Hristov header and Reusser 4th are etched in my mind. Thankfully I'm not that fanatical now. It is 22 years of hurt though.
I thought Dyer came on later, for Shipperley? Can't be sure though, it was a long time ago and me and @Chef Tyke had a VERY heavy night out in Birmingham the night before!
Yeah the Hristov header that was point blank, but straight at their keeper. And then they totally break away from the half way line, and clinch the 4th goal. That terrible first 20 minutes of the 2nd half though is what ruined it for me, when Keith Brown was out of his depth.
