Just watching MOTD and without checking any stats, is Kieffer the best striker to ever have played for us?
I hear you but like Durkar says, who previously has gone on to better things at club level and been a successful International striker?
Tommy Taylor - left Barnsley for Manchester United for one of the highest fees then paid in the Football League. 28 goals in 46 appearances for his hometown club. 131 goals in 191 games for Manchester United. 16 goals in 19 appearances for England. Killed at Munich and buried in Monk Bretton cemetery.
THE highest fee then ever paid. £29,999. Plus a pound to the laundry lady, so the legend goes I think. To stop him being burdened with the title of first 30k player.
£30K was a benchmark fee that a handful of players had already been sold for. Tommy was sold in 1952 and by then the English record transfer was Jackie Sewell (Notts Co. to Wednesday in 1951) for £34,500.
In my 'all time BFC' list of strikers, through my 40 years, I'd probably have him just outside my top 10. Off the top of my head: Currie Payton Hendrie Ward Dyer Shipperley Winnall Woodrow Morris Dike I preferred all of the above. In their respective BFC pomp. I'd have Kieffer in amongst the likes of O'Grady (who scored 15 Champ goals one season for us) and was generally unplayable. And probably Vaz Te a couple of years earlier. I have him in that bracket. But we never really saw much of him in the Champ did we? Granted, he did alright at Wigan, and similarly with Cardiff (neither club did much). Happy for him that he's getting a chance due to injury, for Bournemouth in the Prem. And yes, he's an international for Wales. But the best ever BFC striker feels like a fairly out there statement. Fjortoft and McBurnie I've just remembered. Both impressed me at BFC. Michael Chopra too for a spell.
that's right DR - Kieffer done very well at both Club and Interntional level since 2019 when he left Oakwell - - and he'll have a brilliant World Cup. 29 November 2022 7.00 p.m. Cymru V England in Qatar - England be afraid, be very afraid!
England vs England but not good enough to even dream of playing for England so found a relative in Wales.
what do you mean 'England vs England' - tad confusing! 'found a relative' ?? - KM strong links to Caernarfon (Cymru) area where his paternal grandfather was born.
Place of birth. Torquay. He's playing for Wales because he's not good enough to play for England. That's fair enough. Lots of players in various sports choose not to play for the country of their birth either because they know they're not good enough or because they're too good. Let's not pretend they do it because that's where their heart lies though.
If he was good enough to have played for England that's who he would have chosen given the fact he's English. I had one Grandparent who was Scottish but I in no way think of myself as Scottish.
I've got a Scottish grandad, treasure my Scottish roots and had I been any good at any sport on an international level I'd have happily donned my kilt and sporran. But only after first making sure England weren't interested in my talents. On an aside, I did actually represent England at schoolboy level in chess. But the international qualification rules for chess are even flimsier than for football - you just join the relevant country's association, and start playing. Nothing to do with birth, time residing in the country, or even whether you've played for another country before. You just register, and get playing.
very interesting memory ,” I was an international school boy chess player “ How did you get paid back then was it cash or was it by cheque mate
Very good! Absolutely no chance they were paying me, as I showed so little interest in actually playing chess! The trip to France was quality though, went to see St Etienne v Ajax under the lights. Far more fun than pushing my pawns and bashing my bis....
I think he's done really well. In terms of improvement he's definitely the best but we have had better strikers play for us.
I didn't mean it as dig against Scotland and I've had many a fine holiday in Scotland and used to love talking to my Grandad about the place. If I'd have been any good myself I'd have happily represented them. However just as you say I'd have wanted England first. My point was simply if someone asked me if I was English I would say yes. If someone asked me if I was Scottish I would say no.
