Just found these in an old suitcase of photos i've got. Don't remember where i got them from. Trying to identify the player at the top , the bottom one is Tom Holley ( i think ) a centre half who came from Leeds.
Looking at the name and consulting my Official History book I'd suggest it was Teddy (E for Edward) Ashton. Signed from Mexborough Town in 1927 and transferred to Sheffield United in 1936. Played 303 times for us and scored 73 goals.
There was a sixties football journalist called Tom Holley with The People I think. Probably the same man.
Yes it's the same person. His Dad George was an old Sunderland player and coached Barnsley during the 30s including his son.
Yea was ‘Tubby Ashton’,....I remember him living in Ward Green in his later life whilst I was a little kid!
I was at the Shrewsbury Town game, which was Eddie Loyden's debut and he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win from the penalty spot. It was a bitter cold day and the pitch was rock hard, which made control very difficult, but Barnsley bossed the game throughout and Loyden should have had a hat trick with the chances he missed. On the other hand, he put himself about very effectively and was all over the Shrews' defence. He looked a really good prospect for a striker - tall, but athetic and able to sniff out goal chances. He went on to score eight goals in his first ten games, but ended the season with ten from twenty-two, I think. Our team that day was: Ironside; Murphy, Booth; Bettany, Winstanley, Howard; Earnshaw, Evans, Loyden, Bradbury, Hamstead. 11733 attended. I was in the Brewery stand.
I only ever remember George playing number 11, a proper left winger. Can’t recall Jimmy wearing that shirt
