Hopefully mate this government will be thrown out at the next election. Never to govern again. Genuine question. would you like a government with the same values as the Scots. As I believe we would both be stronger (in a financial way) or would you rather still go it alone. What is the SNP's stance on an election to rejoin the EU. ?
They have already had a referendum once & decided to stay & it is the courts that have come to this decision not the government , personally I would welcome their departure but to say it is not democratic is wrong , they had a vote & the Scotts made the decision not any dictatorship , but as I say let them have their independence along with the Welsh & the Northern Irish if they want .
Possibly the former mate. The situation atm is imo unacceptable. Basic human rights are being denied to many and it will get worse. As far as I know an independent Scotland would apply to rejoin the EU. Nicola had talks earlier this year regarding this. But one step at a time. Our dictatorship in charge has at the moment pulled the ladder away.
What shocked me Ian looking at stats is that the tories get a bigger share of the vote than labour. Admittedly, mainly in the rural areas.
Are you talking about Scotland? If you are unfortunately the tories have more MPs here than Labour. Now that tells a sorry story as to how far Labour have gone backwards here. And the rise of the right in England is a terrible reflection of where the UK is going.
Sorry mate. Yes. Fascinating fact i just found in the 1997 election. Labour won 56 of the 72 seats available.. Tories 0. Libs 10 Scottish nationalists 6.
Ian - I think we all know this in no more than a short term setback. It might be next year, it might be 5 years, but Independence is coming. That really isn't in any doubt. That would be good news for Scotland which is a nation that now has just a different set of values and ethics to England (and has for some years) but also good news for England in the longer term in that it will truly expose the absolutely bonkers system of centralist control that is Westminster/Whitehall. One can only hope that the (northern) English get off their arses to challenge that version of (non) democracy. In the meantime I expect you will just have to put up with a few English people telling you what's best for Scotland - just like the last 400 years
Dale I would like to live in a fair, open and compassionate country which serves its citizens equally. Unfortunately where the UK is at the moment is a worry. All fk you I’m alright Jack. Disgusting. But atm I’m stuck with this regime.
I can’t find the data now but in recent times at least if not ‘never’ - last 40+ years or so at least. Only time it would have been a different outcome without scotland would have been a Tory outright majority in 2010 as opposed to a coalition. Can’t say that i think much would have changed at that time though with how the Lib Dem’s bent the knee.
You will not get what you seek in a UK context Ian - ever - and it does not matter what the 'elected' party is imo. The thing about the Conservatives is; at least you know they are out to shaft most people if they are not friends/supporters. With Labour, it's always more disappointing when you're let down by those who should know/do better.
The difference legally speaking is that there’s mechanisms in the EU membership for a state to remove itself (aka. article 50) whereas there is no such thing in the Scottish devolved government agreements. Sure Ian won’t like this analogy, but the UK Scotland relationship is a lot more similar to states within the US. There’s no mechanism for a state to declare independence either
You are right mate I think . But if it's a close run thing. They could be the difference between who would rule. In 1997 labour had a landslide victory. By 120+ seats. Be interesting if Starmer would go back on the statement of not joining up with the SNP. I understand his rhetoric. Trying to boost the labour party in scotland. But if needs must. Who knows. Edit 1974 election was won by labour with the assistance of the scottish vote. An overall majority of 3. 40 labour seats in Scotland.
Didn't work Interestingly the judgment seems to suggest that the "Union" isn't in fact an actual union. I think the SNP's plan of action should include trying to get an agreed definition of Scotland's rights with respect to exiting the non-union because there doesn't seem to be any except at the whim of the government. It's a bit like joining a sports club which has no effective way of leaving it.
There has never been mechanisms for countries to leave the rule of other countries. But many have done it via UDI ie S. Africa. This could be a possibility but the SNP unwilling to go down that road preferring to do it legally.
I'm not so sure about that, in the pre SNP days possibly. I think the Tories are about to massively implode and could be almost wiped out at the next GE.
