I was very critical of him a few weeks back wondering how he became a Footballer but like Phillips hes becoming a decent player. Brilliant Left foot and delivering some dangerous crosses
Really growing into the side. If he was a bit quicker he'd be a top end Championship or lower Premier League wing back.
I think defensively he's got some work to do in order to progress, and like you say he's not the quickest, but bar Callum Styles under Val he's the most confident I've been with our left back/WB position for a long time. Imagine Carlton Morris or Kieffer Moore on the end of them crosses
The same was said about a certain Mr Glavin, just shows you should give players time to settle before judging & to be honest the lad got some rave reviews from last season at Forest Green , sometimes a bit of patience does not go a miss but football fans are not known for that, at least you are honest .
Yep there’s tonnes of players who took a while to get going, off the top of my head, Pinnock, Mark Roberts….in fact there are loads !
A lot of people have said that to me. But i must have blotted that bit out, cos I can't remember him starting off poorly.
Cadden struggled for fitness when he first arrived. Duff made no secrets about him being a few weeks behind the rest of the squad. It was pretty obvious he was off the pace, and I reemeber some writing him off after 20 minutes at Harrogate in pre-season. His numbers from last season say he's a good footballer, and it was a matter of time before he started having the same effect at this level. I guess the same goes for Phillips too. Sometimes patience is all you need. You can't expect every player to hit the ground running.
So I've been told. And i'd have seen most of those 10 games. Just don't remember that period of his career as some others seem to do. I can picture several poor starters but not him. Maybe I was blinded and not seen the light Of God himself during that period lol.
The most startling/disturbing debut I remember clearly. Was Angus Macdonald. Talk about a rabbit scared in the headlights. He was visibly shaking at the start of the game and eventually calmed down. (I think the big step up in class unnerved him )Thankfully he got shut of those nerves and did ok during his stay. Surprised he's in league 2 tbf. Maybe league 1 at worst.
Never forget where money is concerned mate. Gave it you back 2yrs later. Saved up at a parnd a week. Thanks btw for not charging me interest.
I can. Looked slow and overweight first few games and I wasn’t impressed. He soon improved and won me over though
I wasn't in the slightest bit surprised when Clarke dropped him for the match at Sheffield United in September 1979. We lost 2-0 and were never in the game. The following Wednesday, we were away at Blackburn and Ronnie was recalled. He turned in a MOTM performance, scored the only goal in a 1-0 win and never looked back.
That’s because he was overweight and not match fit. A popular theory was that he’d just done time, but I’ve no idea if it was right or not.
According to Glav, Clarkie wanted him to stay back and mark the opposing fullback (aye great plan). Then in one game he thought "beggar that", went forward and scored. He got a ballocking from Clarke but was then suddenly told to get forward with unsurprising results....
Better to initially look poor and actually be good than the other way round - Chris Lumsden! As for Ronnie I think it was more that Clarke didn’t understand him at first - I’m sure Glav himself has alluded to this.
