I would have expected @Stephen Dawson to already post this.

I worked at Yorkshire Bank during the miners strike. My ex wife's brother was a striking miner. Anything this Tory government does is all abut making money for their mates. The promises of lower taxes for the Tory bum sucking types is gone too. Austerity & no plan from Sunak. They hopefully willy be wiped out at the next election, as nationalism has proved to be a total **** up for the NHS, social care, etc. Boris, your bus is a lie & you are a lovely person.

Is it not more sustainable to mine our own rather than import it? We still use a fair bit in the steel industry etc as far as I know.

Apparently 85% will be exported , if they’d built the new nuclear reactor in the area instead of Suffolk they would have created 5000 jobs not 500

Originally thought the same, but I read today that there's no market for it here as British steelworks have moved on to different methods. As far as I can tell there's a question as to whether there's a long term market for coking coal at all.

Pardon my ignorance, and it is ignorance because I'm not privy about anything like this, but if we're importing coal, would it not be better to mine it ourselves? What's the difference in regards to the environment? Would it not be better for us to mine our coal, so we don't have to pay some Warlord like Putin to fund illegal, barbaric wars? And on the other hand create jobs & export coal to other countries, so they don't have to pay Warlords like Putin? I assume we'll have better healthy and safety and pay for our works in comparison to Russia & other countries for our people too.

Am I missing something? Completely understand why we don't want coal at all, but if we're using it by importation anyway..?

Whilst I am totally against all fossil fuels, the purpose of this mine is to produce coking coal for steel production. There is no real alternative for conversion of iron ore to iron. Importing coal (as we do) makes little sense when we can mine our own (transporting it here from Russia has a huge carbon footprint). Recycling steel avoids the need to dig out more iron ore and coal so that should be the main focus for all steel production not just in the UK but worldwide and indeed we do recycle much of our steel.

It's a very difficult decision to make which really aught to be made by some adults, pity there are none in this government....
