Joey Barton is one of the worst people in Football. That being said doesn't what he say make sense? Should we just keep Southgate in charge indefinitely if he keeps getting us to later stages of major tournaments? Or do we expect more from this group of players so be brave and bold by getting someone else in charge who might get us a major trophy?
I’m not sure what coach can get more out of these players . Maybe, we are expecting too much and we are not as good as we think they are !
I'd say Southgate has a contract until after Euro 2024. Sacking him would be ridiculous. So unless he wants to step down he should be allowed to lead the team into the tournament. Then look at the situation after that.
Back on topic. The priority should be the World Cup. Not just winning a competition. If Southgate is staying on he should stay on until 2026 after the next World Cup. If he doesn't want it beyond the Euro's he should stand aside.
Well.he failed to keep Rovers up so he should know. And Gareth Southgate has more integrity in his little finger than Barton has in his whole body.
We do well against teams we 'should' beat. We lose against teams of equal or slightly better standing. I thought you wanted to keep Southgate though? No point in sacking him if we just get someone on the same level as Gareth
Well said Helen. That's one thing you can't assign blame on Southgate for. He's done an absolutely brilliant job on the lads, all wanting to play and fight for one another, forgetting about their club's rivalries. His man management has been nothing short of excellent, considering the crap we had before he took the helm!
I think he is. He’s talking as if both world cups were there for the taking. We were light years behind France in 2018, which is why I wasn’t too fussed about losing to Croatia. And this year, we just lost in a game that could’ve gone either way. It happens. Would like to know who he thinks would do better.
The only issue with that mentality is, there's a couple of other countries interested in winning as well. I can't stand the culture of 'we didn't over-acheive, manager's got to go'. Last 8 and losing to France is perfectly honourable. It's as bad as the Prem (various brothers-in-law from London). Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City, United and Spurs all expect success every season. 5 of them are going to be disappointed. Modern football is sh*te.
We lost to a team with 4-5 probable starters missing through injury. We never had a better chance to beat France and yet they fluffed their lines. Social media is full of famous people praising the team for a good tournament, but it wasn't that good because this group of players should be doing better. For decades there has always been an excuse to why they haven't won a major event for so long.
Blatant foul on Saka 20 seconds before they scored Foul on Kane inside the box not given by ref or VAR Those decisions go our way and its a totally different game.
Doesn't matter who they had missing, it's about who they had playing for them. Benzema missing, so they have their record goalscorer to play in front of Mbappe and Griezmann. Would Pogba get into the midfield ahead of Rabiot and Tchouaméni nowadays. Similarly, Kante, who isn't as good as he was in 2018, and Chelsea are now reportedly looking for a replacement. By saying we should be doing better, you're basically saying we should be beating France, which has a bit of a 'Teams like Barnsley' feel to it. It was an even game, they fluked a goal, while the best striker we've had this century missed a pen. Can't pin that on the coach. Wasn't a good tournament, but similarly, wasn't a tournament that demands a sacking.
Glenn Hoddle makes a good point in his Daily Star column today. Since winning the World Cup in 1966 we've only beaten Paraguay, Belgium, Cameroon, Denmark, Ecuador, Colombia, Sweden and Senegal in knockout ties. That tells you we've had nearly sixty years of underachieving. We cannot beat major nations who have previously won the WC. It's a mentality not something we've been unlucky about or is a coincidence.
