Does anyone believe that we will ever advance to the point where computers can run simulations of planets and life, such that every element in that system is programmed such that it believes it is a real and conscious being? If you do think we can get that far then it follows that on a probability basis we are overwhelmingly likely to be in one of those simulations, because many simulations will be run whereas there is only one underlying real world...
Well, all I can bet is, I bet you ain't seen nothing like me in any amusement hall. I'm deaf, dumb and blind, but by golly, I do play a mean pinball.
The simulation thesis is interesting. But are computers conscious and self-aware? A simulation would be computational, computer based, and tied to some sort of system. I don't think there is a place for self-awareness in that.
Yes definitely. The bleed creates similar symptoms to a stroke, she's still very forgetful and sometimes confused. She wasn't on any medication that would cause hallucinations, think it was the effects of the injury/ bleed. I asked her how she felt about seeing him and if it was disturbing? She said no! So we all agreed it was like a pleasant reunion of sorts. I think it's helped with the loss which she's been struggling with due to the circumstances surrounding his covid death, not being there when he passed and small funeral.
If you mean still a theory in the scientific sense then so is gravity. I accept the Brain is a large unknown and how our particular brains have evolved to give us consciousness is amazing to say the least. However looking back along the evolutionary chain its also clear this wasn't always the case. I don't personally believe natural evolution would bring forth the kind of Almost supernatural existence of the kind of "soul" you describe. I don't know if it is the case for yourself but often this kind of belief is linked to people's desire to hope something more exists than this life and that they will see dead loved ones again.
That touches on the traditional 11 year old argument. "There can't be a God because bad things happen". Anyway, I'm going to leave my input here because actually this sort of topic can be quite detrimental to my own mental health. I know a lot about this stuff because, to be honest, I've been to hell and back with my mental health and I still struggle day to day. It's very interesting stuff, but I have to be aware of how much I can engage with it. Some people can obviously engage with it more than me, and I do love the subject. My eyes have definitely been opened over recent years to new possibilities. There's certaintly nothing scary about it, to an extent, but if I go too far, my mind looses its grounding. Well, to be honest, it probably came from an inner thought that I find the idea that we are basically chemical robots hugely, crippling depressing. So yeh, you might be right, I might be looking for hope or something. But objectively, I don't think the science is clear cut on exactly what the brain is and it definitely isn't settled on what consciousness is. Thanks for the debate, enjoyed it
Yes! That was me! I like it there, the tables complement my supple wrist and I always seem to get the replay there.
I've enjoyed it too. I certainly would hate to be the cause of any ill mental health as its a struggle I have been through with my wife and to some extent myself. I wish you well.
There is nothing in the New Testament about homosexuality, nothing at all. However Jesus was pretty strongly opposed to money lenders, gambling and wealth. So unsurprisingly from modern Christianity, they turn a blind eye to the actual teachings of Jesus and concentrate on the sex bits from the Old Testament. Don’t even start on abortion, women’s rights etc.
I certainly believe in it. It’s where you, Super Tyke & that Woodhouse fella get to bugger each other senseless for the attention seeking trophy!! Dream boy 2000 makes videos in his Samsung, before joining in on the end of the world bum fest.. Just banter, reight.?
