    Set to rise by 5.9% feom next March. Its absolutely disgusting that they can justify ripping off ordinary folk for such a ***** service. Highest fares in Europe, worst service in Europe. Something needs to be done because the amount people are now expected to pay for such a poor service is scandalous.

    Same news every new year. It's not on though, you're right. How do you get people on public transport when it's so poor and expensive? So frustrating. It really should be cheaper for a car full of people to use a train/bus than use the car. GRRR. Pet hate of mine.

    Nationalisation and fare subsidies are the only solution mate. Privatisation has now been shown to be a complete con and simply a way of funnelling money from the poorest people to the richest.

    They're trying to sell it as a positive as it's 'below inflation'. Yeah, and so are 99% of people's payrises!

    The fares and the 60% of my trains getting cancelled/being delayed finally forced my hand last year, in terms of learning to drive, get a car.

    Just my luck that since I've been driving, all I've known is the current fuel prices!

    Still the best decision I could have made. No idea how I stuck it out for so long on the trains.

    They need re-nationalising, along with all the other stuff the Tories sold to their mates.

    I've gone the other way! I started a new job in Leeds in August and after a couple of months of driving and having had enough of the M62/M621 and the ongoing roadworks decided to start using the train. I commute daily from Slaithwaite/Huddersfield to Leeds.
    Transpennine Express are an absolute disgrace and probably the worst train operator I've seen (they're all bad mind!). I wouldn't mind so much if there was a reliable, punctual service but it's just chaos.
    If this level of service was experienced down south then something would have already been done about it.

    I enjoyed trainspotting more when it was nationalised. Used to get occasional loco hauled trains through Pontefract Baghill before it was privatised. Now it's just a 5hitty DMU.

    M62 is a joke, you're not wrong. I've taken to going alternative, scenic routes, and to be fair, I don't have a job that requires me in at the crack of dawn. And I leave the office late so that my trip home's easier.

    I shudder even at the thought of a train.

    Aye mate, we used to hang about on the bridge over the line next to Bolton on Dearne station. Almost all the stopping trains were DMUs except one train each way that went from York to Bournmouth via Birmingham and Poole and back. There were loads of freight trains as well back then, loose coupled coal trains going to and from Manvers as well as long distance ones which always held the promise of exotic locos from distant sheds. Can't imagine train spotting being much fun at all these days.

    Compare to a single train fare from Granada to Madrid (about 300 miles) £19.
