Just seen post on Facebook regarding the best 5 players you've seen at a ground, not on TV. Got me thinking best 5 reds or best 5 no matter who they played for. For what it's worth mine are Glavin Wright (Ian) Hignett Hendrie Ginola Maybe I should have done a reds and non Reds but it's hard to narrow either down
Best 5 seen live individual performances in a game G. Best MAN UTD v west brom Glavin BARNSLEY v various Keegan Barnsley v NEWCASTLE Bellamy Barnsley v NORWICH Barraclough. Wendy v BARNSLEY Too many others to mention But Ginola v Barnsley And one that I'd throw in the mix Bruce Dyer CRYSTAL PALACE v Barnsley
I saw plenty of greats in the premier league season but too young to appreciate them. Kevin De Bruyne best I’ve seen live. In the FA Cup at the Etihad a few years back David Silva was exceptional & Tevez was on fire that day. Them two have to be up there as well.
Robert Prosinečki for Portsmouth, only player I can ever remember getting a standing ovation from us after his unbelievable display.
Agree but for the life of me I can't remember who the Goalie was. Home game in the McCarthy era. Unbelievable performance to keep us out. Every player on the Barnsley side and all our fans stood and applauded him at the end of the game.
In the Prem season, Bergkamp and Overmars pretty much beat us on their own. The other 9 Arsenal players could've just sat and watched.
I was at that game. The other occasion I remember was a good young Wolves player who ran himself ragged for 80 minutes before he was subbed off to a standing ovation from both sets of fans. His name escapes me though.
In the flesh, Henrik Larsson for Sweden against Wales - and a return of 37 goals in 106 caps would put him at the top level of international goalscorers. On tv, probably Neymar and Elano for Santos when they beat Bolivar 8-0 in the 2012 Copa Libertadores. The first half was one of the best team performances I've ever watched... This is easy. I'll repeat what I posted on the Lost Football Grounds site. In order of brilliance: - Larsson - Glavin - Maradona - Messi - Hammill Piece of piss
Michael Branch IIRC. This and the Prosinecki games are the only times I remember both home and away fans giving a standing ovation.
In the flesh anybody that played for Liverpool v Barnsley in 2008. That could have been a cricket score had it not been for Luke Steele in goal. Most one sided game I've ever seen us win. The skill level of those Liverpool players was something I'd never witnessed before in the flesh. I was going to add Chelsea to that but I think we gave them a game and they didn't look all that. We were probably acclimatised by the Liverpool game. That's why it was such a shame we drew Cardiff City instead of Portsmouth in the Semi-Final. We were primed like a coiled spring after those two wins and the Cardiff game was an anti climax.
That was a sickener. At that time, there was only 4 clubs capable of winning a major trophy, and we'd beaten two of them, only to lose to another Championship team.
They were absolutely ridiculously good, weren't they? It was a pretty even game, especially in the first half. Then Bergkamp scored an incredible goal out of absolutely nothing.
I saw the FB post and it got me thinking. Mine is massively skewed though by the fact that I went to a lot of games at the Euros 2012 and 2020, and the 2018 World Cup, including watching Brazil and Argentina. I guess I'd need an extra list on top of yours for internationals, as there was obviously very little crossover between the players I saw in major tournaments and at Oakwell. John Stones, Kieran Trippier, and Helik in the pre-match kickabout!
I think out of the Chelsea squad that day, Joe Cole was the only one who took us seriously. Anelka in particular was like a kid who'd been told to go out and play instead of watching his favourite TV programme!
