Apologies for being early with this. The bookies have us as the early favourites for this one, this despite Charlton's recent improvement in form. They've amassed 7 points from their last 5 league games, in contrast to the 2 in the previous 5. At the Valley, Charlton have gained 20 of their 31 league points this season. They are the 9th best home team in the division and are unbeaten in their last 2 home league fixtures. Their home form is wildly inconsistent however, with good results against Peterborough, Ipswich and Portsmouth being offset by disappointing results against Cheltenham, MK Dons and Bristol Rovers. Our record at the Valley this century is quite good. 4 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. Our last 2 visits there though have resulted in those 2 defeats. Historically though, we've found Charlton a difficult place to go. Prior to our win there in 2008, when a brace from Jon Macken and a Darren Moore header gave us a 3 goal half time lead, we'd never won at the Valley despite 21 previous visits. Despite being unbeaten in 3 away from home in the league, our injury issues make this a difficult game to predict. We generally struggle in London, and Charlton seem to perform better against the better sides in the league. With that being said, I'm going for a narrow 1-0 reds victory, with Cole on the scoresheet.
2-0 Charlton Big game Saturday, however I’m expecting this to be the start of slide down into mid table where our squad belongs. Hopefully more incomings by the end of month can give us that extra spark we are clearly needing. Don’t think the Watters signing will make a difference given he’s not even match fit!
Hard to predict but if we want anything from this game we have to score first if we give them the customary penalty start we will lose again Head says another 3-0 defeat
Travelling more in hope than expectation. Not confident at all. If we're to get anything at all we have to score first and avoid the now customary penalty against......
2-0 Charlton 91st and 95th minutes both unnecessary penalties awarded by Homer referee nee Simpson COYR
I think the bubble has already been popped. Paper-thin squad and half of 'em towing. If Mads plays out of his skin and we avoid conceding another penalty, we might, just, scrape summat, but difficult to see beyond a home win. 2-0 Charlton
Last time I went we were 3-0 up and contrived to lose 5-3, miss a penalty and have Ron Futcher sent off after scoring a hat-trick. Still, 2 days later we won at Southampton in the cup, so the memories were erased.
Didn't go to Charlton but was at the Dell on the Monday. To think we had a trip to London for a league game at Saturday and then were back down to the south coast 48 hours later for a cup game. Unthinkable in the modern era.....
