My eldest son James took his own life last month after suffering with depression, aged just 36 years. He was a life long Reds fan, and even though he spent his recent years in Brighton, we would meet up regularly in London when we played there. He really enjoyed the Wembley finals of 2016 and it would do him proud if we could hold a minute's applause in the 36th minute of the Accrington game. Would make me a very proud Dad too Thank you Mike Lee ps As a tribute to James we will be holding his wake in the Legends Suite at Oakwell
I'm so sorry to read this Mike. I'll admit that I used to be quite ignorant of the illness that is depression. However, having had friends take their own life when they appeared on the outside to be the life and soul of the party and seeing how it effected the loved ones around then made me completely reverse my attitude towards it. It is a massive part of everyday life nowadays, especially among young men and although we all read that "it's good to talk" that's a lot easier said than done for those suffering. I'd beg anyone who sees just the slightest sign of depression among friends or family or suffers from it themselves plucks up the courage to bring the subject up. It really does save lives. I hope that you posting this sad message and the replies to it give you strength and comfort.
Sorry for your loss, and God bless him. I can't comprehend how you and your loved ones must be feeling. May he rest in peace.
What an absolutely horrendous thing to read, I am so sorry Mike. Of course we will support anything you want to suggest to recognise your boy. I am only a few years older than he was; I can’t contemplate how sad it must be for a parent to lose their child. How horrible. That he was feeling that he had no other option is so desperately sad. We need to get rid of any part of society that still encourages men to front up, bottle up and instead get everyone talking. It is a damning statistic that suicide rates are three times higher in men than women. Good work has been done, but not enough. Let’s break the stigma. Anyone who is more tech savvy than me, can we get this set up to make sure it is bumped next week before the Accrington game and make sure James gets the recognition his passing warrants? Warmest regards to you and all your family Mike.
So sorry for your loss. Devastating for your family. I probably won’t be at that game but I’m sure the Reds there will honour your son. I hope it will give you some comfort. RIP James.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Must be the worst feeling in the world to lose your child - thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time
Oh, Mike. Under the circumstances, that is such a small request considering what heartbreak you and your family are going through and I'm certain people will do as you ask. Condolences to you and your family. R.I.P. James.
