Impressed when he came on. Played Right back and showed some good stuff going Forward. Phillips was awful no idea how he managed to stay on field
I was hoping he would get a run out instead of Cadden yesterday but has it happened he had to play on the right and looked quite good to me.
Same thing has been said about Phillips a few times. He’s scored crucial goals for us, but his general contribution over 90 minutes often looks pretty anonymous. Once his goals dry up, that becomes a problem.
For me, Larkeche did enough yesterday to show that he ought to be given a chance at left wing back. He was competitive, won a fair amount of ball and generally found a white shirt when in possession. However, what was equally obvious is that his right foot is just for helping him stand-up and so, unfortunately, when he had the ball out wide going forward he always had to stop and turn on to his left.
I really enjoyed the way we played for much of yesterday’s game. I know we lost, but still. We’ll play worse than that and win. We have done, in fact. A few times. It was - for me - one of our best performances of the season. We murdered them in that first half, there were some great moves, cracking periods of play and we went very close to scoring on a number of occasions. I get that we didn’t score. And again, we’ve gift wrapped goals for the opposition. There’s always lots to improve, plenty to work on. We have had zero luck all season. That’s not me trying to excuse anything. Because we are sixth. Which is a lot higher than many expected us to be. Higher than I’d expected. But it’s a fact. Whether it’s the amount of injuries, the opposition’s ability to somehow score with nearly every shot on target or a full 24 matches where decisions from officials have not gone our way. Sounds like whingeing, I know. But not one penalty. No contentious decision favouring us. A number of offside goals that weren’t offside. Referees allowing the opposition to kill the game. It happened again yesterday. Lino doesn’t see Rak-Sakyi is offside and at 2-0 it’s pretty much game over. There’s no conspiracy. It’s just horrendously bad luck. We keep playing like this, the results will turn again. It’s been two league games. We have a play-off shout which I think is impressive all things considered. And if we are still in this division next season, we’ll be even stronger.
Phillips had a great scoring run but even then seemed to contribute little in overall play. Now his goals have dried up he’s largely anonymous. He certainly was yesterday.
I agree we played some good stuff yesterday but despite having 60% possession we never created anything clear cut. It just felt inevitable we wouldn’t score. For me we need a physical presence up top. An aerial threat, someone to hold the ball up and get the midfield up the pitch would be a massive benefit. Cole needs a rest for me too.
Pretty much agree with everything you say...every team has a dip....ours looks like now. I actually thought that 2nd half yesterday, well first 25 mins of it, was embarrassing. Just wave after wave of attacks, playing through them and around them. Charlton were actually time wasting! But for all that we can't score....as these things work out, we probably continue with this for another few games ...as you say we will get out of this but it may take a few games to do so. Hopefully new boys will improve us and I still don't think a top 6 finish is out of reach.
Agree...enough chances to win three games. I looked at rest of division and only one team (think it was Fleetwood with 19 shots) had any where near our efforts...doubling most teams in fact!
Our final ball or cross leaves a lot to be desired and nearly everything was either blocked or headed clear by a Charlton defender but i also think our forwards movement and anticipation needs to be much better we always seem to be on our heels when balls come into the box.
Crying out for a genuine winger. We currently have no way of changing shape so if Plan A fails there's no Plan B.
Spot on. I did think the ref. gave us our fair share of decisions . Nice to hear the opposition fans moaning over some of em for a change.
Agree with much of this. And below is a comment typical of many on the Charlton forum A battling win - Barnsley are a good side and we were under the cosh for a lot of the game. Some last ditch blocks and a large slice of luck helped us win.
Ref much better than the previous 4 or 5 just a gripe on bookings he seemed much keener to book our players than theirs for similar offences. And the one time he did book one of theirs he should have played advantage and booked him after our move broke down or we scored.
According to the BBC L1 website (although I'm not sure it's correct) he's our equal second top scorer with a better goals per minute ratio than anyone else. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/barnsley/top-scorers
