I currently have bt whole home Wi-Fi connected to 4 discs. Speed is 70 mbps which is the best we can get as we live in the sticks.

There will often be 2 Xbox’s running / Netflix on etc and the speeds suffer a little.

Is there a better solution out there? the kit is the stuff that bt provided. I have read a little into mesh systems , would a new better router also help?

    Thanks in advance !

70mbs sounds like a dream! We're in the middle of Lincoln in a new building and we get 15! I really don't understand how it works as the Georgian terraced houses round the corner get super high speed. Very frustrating.

That’s strange I assumed all city centres had the cabling sorted

    What throughout do you get?

If you get anywhere near 70mbps,then no point spending.

Only advice I would give is dump the wifi and ethernet your house up but that might not be practical.

Makes no difference who my provider is, the top speeds on offer are awful no matter who does my billing. I'm guessing it's because the complex where we live was built just over ten years ago and the equipment was state of the art, but nothing has been updated since then.

We're probably not staying in this place for longer than a year so I'm not going to get too worked up about it, but it's very irritating.

Thanks mate - yep about 70mbps, it’s generally ok but the kids moan. There is one area that’s quite a distance from the router which is probably the main issue - I suppose I could hard wire into there?

No worries, was gonna recommend a lad called Jason who owns Lincs Wi-Fi Solutions whose really good, but sounds like not worth it.

It’s the latency you need to check if kids are moaning about lag on Xbox. Run test on Xbox and see what Nat type it is. Should be open.

you could also split the frequencies in the router so it always connects to 5ghz. and not 2.4

Also, put your phone number in there to see if other technology is available (based on Openreach only).

    * Note post codes not accurate
** FTTP on demand is no use but FTTP is.

EDIT : Obviously that won't help with the wifi but it might help if you need more than the 70mbit you get.

Thanks mate, I'll bear it in mind if we're still getting slow speeds once we've moved.

Hi. I have BT / BT router and nowhere near the speed you mention. I am OK, but I referred to another thread on the subject last Autumn on 'mesh' and I invested in a 3 pack of Deco TP Link mesh thingy's (M5 I think). Stuff has been stable and far better than the legacy plug-in wi-fi extender we used.

So Mesh has helped me - I on on a 1/3 of your download speed with BT. I think @Micky Finn suggested he had BT discs at home, with thick walls, without issue. You have the same and they are essentially BT's version of mesh. When you say there is one area a distance from the router, can you not place a disc closer to that area (though still close enough to get a router signal)?

    Good luck.

What speed do you get with a laptop plugged into the Router via an ethernet cable? More than 70 Mbs? Wondered if you are already maxed out in terms of WiFi coverage.
We have TP link powerlines and Vodafone wi-fi 5.5 out of our router, but that is feeding from 900Mbs Openreach fibre.

Do you have a 5G phone?

I moved to 5G broadband a couple of months ago and the speeds I get are vastly beyond what I could get on "traditional" broadband.

If you download an app called Cellmapper, you can see the nearest tower and signal strength that'll be a good indication of whether it's worth your while.

I put up an external antenna too and the signal is rock solid.

70mbs download should be more than enough to receive 2 or more 4K streams with bandwidth to spare. If you are having issues it is unlikely to be your WAN. Is your Wi-fi router dual band? 2.4 & 5. 5 is better and has less latency so better for gaming but has a shorter range . We have no access to fibre but get microwave BB from across the valley. 95mbs download and 7mbs upload.

Thanks everyone - the speed in seems to be fine. It’s quite a large area that the Wi-Fi has to travel especially to the room where it ‘lags’ the most - I suppose I was wondering if I could buy any better quality Wi-Fi boosters / discs / router that would achieve a better result than the BT discs / router with the package

Turn WiFi off on your phone, run a download speed test, if the download speed beats what you're getting from your isp, buy a 4G or 5G router, depending which network is available to you. I only have a 4G phone, I just ran the test and I got 50 mbps.

I can't believe I never thought of doing that before. 45 Mbps off 4g.
