The BBC4 documentary in three parts called The US and the Holocaust was a real eye opener for me. I never knew how reluctant Americans were to accept what the Nazis were up to. It took an awful long time to believe it and they virtually closed their doors to immigrants, especially Jewish ones. When they eventually relaxed their quota system it was too late for the millions who had already been murdered.

One incredible incident showed a ship crammed with desperate migrants that had sailed across the Atlantic being refused permission to unload their human cargo. After weeks of fruitless negotiations they had to turn around and sail back to Europe. When you think that the United States was built on the labours of immigrants it just seemed incredible that they were so intransigent for so long.

Footage showed openly Nazi supporters at huge gatherings across the States, a bit like the Nuremberg rallies.

We weren't much better. IIRC we also turned that ship away too. For the Kindertransport, we rejected the parents and in the 30s we refused to let in Jews who had no money - after knowing that their banks accounts had been frozen and they weren't allowed to take money out of Germany.

And Mosely and the NUF held the largest ever political rally in the UK during that period.

We mainly recognise the holocaust with the Nazis but did anyone know that one of the first holocaust mentioned in historic documentation actually occurred here in England under Edward 1st.
He borrowed money from the Jwws to pay for his wars against the Welsh.
Needless to say instead of repayment he actually murdered the majority the Jews and kicked the rwst out of the country
It wasn't until late into the war of the roses that the jews started to return. But this was due to them being abused and murdered in Russia and other European countries.

It's often a case of before people start throwing stones and words it's sometimes better to take a step back and look at yourselves and the dark secrets people keep.

The way we treated the jews in the past and more recently the slave trade.
Perhaps the English aren't the best people to lead by example.

The National Holocaust Centre near Newark is less than an hours drive from us and certainly worth a visit. Really beautiful and serene but extremely haunting at the same time.

Can recommend 'The Escape Artist' by Jonathan Freedland, the true story of the two men that escaped from Auschwitz and alerted the world to the horrors that were going on there. Absolutely incredible tale, but even their detailed report struggled, initially, to gain any traction with the Allied governments. So even though the world knew, very little was done about it, and the Nazis just ramped up their murder machine. Brilliant, brilliant read.

Oh I know we’ve not done much better through the ages. I’m not far from York and there is a big information board at the bottom of the steps leading up to the iconic Clifford’s Tower which details the horrific massacre of Jews in 1190. The entire Jewish population of the city were murdered or chose suicide there.

This kind of persecution has always been there but the Nazis took it to appalling extremes as we all know. My partner is Polish and one of the first things we did, about 12 years ago, was to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau. I was overwhelmed by it all, much more so than the sanitised museum at Dachau which I visited while stationed in Germany 1990-93.

Anybody that still pretends that none of it happened must have several brain cells less than a moron.

Try 'Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin' by Timothy Snyder

“Snyder examines the political, cultural, and ideological context tied to a specific region Central and Eastern Europe where Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany committed mass murders of an estimated 14 million non-combatants between 1933 and 1945, the majority outside the death camps of The Holocaust.”

And now another dictator’s at it again…

And it hasn't just been the Jews. The Armenian Genocide, the Holomodor, the Killing Fields, genocides in Indonesia, East Timor, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Bosnia and Rwanda just in the last 120 years alone. Mankind sucks at times.

If you held a minutes silence for every victim of the Holocaust you would be silent for 11 and half years.

When you watch Schindlers List it gives you an idea of the trauma of the Final Solution but sitting on your settee in comfort can never bring home how terrible it was for the "unter menschen" in the 30s and 40s Europe.
We lead very lucky lives nowadays, for which we should be very grateful.

Jewish people have been persecuted for centuries in most countries. Minorities are easy to pick on and abuse. Anybody who is in holocaust denial is as a previous poster said a complete moron. More moronic than moron Mike from Moronshire.
The key thing is not to pick on minority groups so, as a slight aside, I find it cruel beyond belief that the Jewish state should persecute the Palestinian minority. You would think that humanity would learn...

It's only recently been recognised here in Spain that over 7000 Republicans who fled to France after Franco won the civil war were deported to Mauthousen 2 years later, 5000 of whom died there. Some people here have only just been told that their grandfathers/uncles were amongst that number.

& the Native Americans? Now Ken Burns has told the story about the US relationship to the Holocaust, his next project should be that home grown genocide, which he’s only touched on in relation to other histories. But needs an accurate documentation of its own, Probably never happen, he won’t get public funding for that..
But the appropriation of the Latin meaning is earliest recorded in our own little bout of ethnic cleansing, by our own invasive ancestors..
This is why I abhor this ‘Lest We Forget’ right wing mantra. Forget who? Nationalistic selection..?
