https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Football_League_play-offs Ipswich having to get past Bolton and then playing us in the final. As Paul Walker said, it's happening again
Ipswich had all the luck in the world against Bolton in the Semi's. I would have fancied our chances much more had it been Bolton instead, at Wembley.
I still say that header was more or less straight at the keeper, rather than it being a brilliant save.
I've never seen a replay. It never seems to be part of the highlights for some unknown reason. It looked a worldie save at the time.
Me neither. Real time was enough. Haven't ever watched a replay of the game. Scarred me for life. Etched in my memory.
Great day only spoiled by Hristov's miss at the end. When we got off the bus we met Dicky Bird and then Parky walked past while we ate our chips. It was great to see all the Reds and blues mixed together in the pubs without a hint of trouble. Not like the mayhem at St Andrews.... Bloody good team we had that season.
Hirstovs miss it was a great save if I remember right... Barnards penalty miss on the other hand, he scores that and we win.
And (by a coincidence) I'll be over there on playoff final day. That playoff final was one of my best days watching sport. I loved it. Walking down Wembley Way, I was so relieved that we had masses of fans turn up. I was absolutely a very proud Barnsley man that day... Losing wasn't as painful as it should have been, I think, because Barnsley had made such a big contribution to wonderful day... Also watching Jeff Fenech getting his first belt by beating a Shingaki in Sydney. The local crowd was delirious and i was with the family.... and the socceroos beating Uruguay to reach the world cup finals in Italy. The whole crowd was like brothers.. In fact, these, my best three... were more about being in a band of brothers ...
It was a better team than the one that got us promoted IMO. Very fine margins. The club never recovered from this defeat. Ah, history...
The long train journey on my own back to Leeds still sits in my memory. I went to the game with my brother, but he lived in Marlow at the time.
