77 years old. His voice was undoubtedly a part of the soundtrack to my life, and I suspect many others on here too.
A lovely man. I met him about 10 years ago at Portman Road when we were playing Ipswich. He was the voice of BBC football.
RIP Motty, icon of broadcasting. Loved his sheepskin coat. My Dad used to have one similar in the 70's and always wore it at the match. Happy memories.
As a kid kicking my ball about in the back garden if I was pretending I was scoring the winning goal in a FA Cup final his was the voice in my head. His passion was infectious. RIP Motty.
Know a couple of blokes who used to work at Sheffield Telegraph, both reckon he was one of the nicest bloke's you could wish to meet.
Shocking, sad news. Like the Queen you grow up with them and it's a shock to the system when they're not here anymore. You just think they'll be here forever. Never met him but John Motson was a Football icon. R.I.P
Yep. Growing up in the 80s/90s, his was the distinctive voice. There were other commentators of the time that are now considered legends of their profession, but the second Motson spoke, I knew who was commentating, which wasn't the case with the others (for me anyway).
The "rivalry" between him and Barry Davies put the BBC football commentaries streets ahead of anything ITV could produce. I know a lot thought well of Brian Moore on the other side but I never thought he was in the same league as Motty and Davies. Sad news and 77 is too early to go.
Heartbreaking after losing Dickie Davies as well this week - guy was a legend and the ultimate professional. RIP Motty
Sad news his was the voice on Match of The Day along with Barry Davies when I was growing up, Most of todays commentators are leagues below them This is brilliant - Id forgotten about the paint pot. Dont you miss the Baseball ground
I never went there but it's got to be better than the soulless replacement. However, I think it suffered from serious drainage issues, as my mate who supports Derby says that the pitch looked like that from about Septmber to April most seasons!
