I'd be pissed off if that was against us. If that's a penalty then there should be at least 2/3 given every game. He was half way on the floor before he touched him, Cole needed to be stronger.
I think if devante didn't try and go for the ball we would have got it, he didn't act enough which is what you have to do now unfortunately
We’ve had weak penalties given again us this season - this one was a clear penalty. Whether or not we’d be unhappy if it was given against us if immaterial- it was a shirt pull that put him off
Exactly the same type of thing that won Leon Clarke a penalty in 2008 for Wednesday... against us. Yes, 15 years ago, but a blatant foul is still a blatant foul. Should've been a straight red by law.
No striker I know goes down in that position (with a tap in/ guaranteed goal) unless there is an intervention. Granted it’s not as clear cut as described on Radio Sheffield, but given that Cole is past the defender, the defender has two hands on him, it’s a blatant pen. Even my SWFC supporting husband thinks it is.
Reading the replies on Twitter i like the one saying ref gave us everything in first half as we were in his ear. Strange how they missed their players doing it and waving imaginary cards, and Barton was in refs ear at half time lol.
People saying he should have stayed on his feet and been stronger have obviously never played football before, blokes going for the ball and gets pulled back it. I think if the ref does give a foul he has to send their man off as its a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Exactly. Cole can’t even see their player. He’s focussed on the ball. Absolutely no reason to go down.
It was Thomas Parsons, first-year ref who also oversaw the home game against Port Vale. That went well too.
The reason players go down in the area is to get a penalty. Like we've all seen dozens, if not hundreds, of times before. I'm not suggesting that's what Cole did on this occasion. Fact is, I don't know. I know the Bristol Rovers defender had his hands on Cole, but I don't know if that was enough to bring him down or if, like many strikers before him, Cole felt the defenders hands on him and purposely went down. From the footage I could argue the point either way. I do concede we have had penalties given against us this season in similar situations. But the argument that Cole had no reason to go down isn't one that stacks up. He had very good reason to go down because by going down you often get a penalty and it's a tactic used all the time in professional football.
