A lot said he wasn’t quick enough to be a wing back, but he did his defensive duties well and loved a cross from deep, similar to the ones Beckham was doing. Didn’t have to go past a man because he could pick out. Along pass 4 times out of 5.
Sometimes it’s easy to overlook someone who is a 7 or 8 out 10 week in week out - probably one of the most consistent players I’ve seen.
It was just a brain-dead but vocal minority who didn't. It was telling though how he mentioned that at most clubs the local lads are held it very high esteem, whereas at Barnsley they're ripe for abuse. That's very sad, and something that needs to change.
Absolutely brilliant lad Nick. I love the lad to bits. He and my Dad had an amazing relationship, and they kept in touch every week for the last 25 years. Without being all sentimental he’s like a brother to me. He was the first person outside of family I called, when my old man passed away (he was in Jamaica at the time working). What a boy, what a player and BFC runs through him.
Wasn’t it the old man who persuaded the club to take Nicky back on when he’d been released by a manager (Machin) who then got sacked? Better judge of a footballer than most was the late great Winnie.
Tuesday drinking club in Penistone British Legion, my Dad was steward at the time. Had some great times with that squad.
One of the best moments in my time at the club was getting to announce his return. And what a job he’s doing with the 18s. Great bloke. Bleeds BFC.
Most revealing thing about that interview for me is when he said he was on £150 per week when he first broke into the first team. The lads who came through the academy were on a lot less, initially at least, than players signed from outside
On the topic of ex-reds on podcasts - Alfie Mawson was on Ben Foster's Fozcast last week. Worth a listen.
