A friend if mine sat in the away end yesterday, as a neutral. She said “Barnsley fans are aren’t very vocal”. i asked her if she was being serious. She said she could only hear Plymouth fans, and they were singing all game. I thought their fans were borderline silent. As someone who usually sits East Upper (family stand) I know for a fact that there have been times when people have said how good the atmosphere has been in the Ponty, yet we’ve heard little of it. I’ve also known times when the East stand has been quite raucous (yes really!) and the people in the Ponty have heard nothing. Whilst the club is doing its best to improve the atmosphere, some work must be done to improve the acoustics, particularly at the Ponty end. The past three games have been so much better in terms of atmosphere - we need to build on it.
You mean we need to build on ends of stands to keep noise in ,open ends don’t lend to good noise rentention
Pretty similar to the Portsmouth game. Where the pompey fan's were vocal all game. I think it is more noticeable when you are sat in either end. But from the sides you can pick up both ends. The worst example for me re atmosphere is the Sty. Neither end can hear each other. Yet when I'd rock up at work both of us would say how loud our own were.
I listened to the Plymouth commentary yesterday. It was very good. They obviously wanted Plymouth to win and spoke more about their players than ours, but they were complimentary about the quality of our team and our goals. When the third went in they said that at half time, after calling the first half even, they wouldn't have believed Barnsley would go on to win 3-0, but the way we played second half we were full value for it. Anyhoo... After we scored the second they commented on the atmosphere and they were blown away by the amount of noise we were making. The pair of them genuinely made 'Wow!' comments regarding the volume coming from the stands.
From the Ponty it was bouncing. But that’s kind if my point. We know it’s there. But if it doesn’t travel to the far end of the ground, then for half of the game, our players aren’t hearing it - or rather it’s not so impactful.
I don't know what we can do about that other than a completely redesigned stadium. People often talk about filling in the corners but that wouldn't work. Our three large stands all have very high rooves that slope down from the front of the stand to the back. This channels the sound up into the air and not out into the ground. It's why, when the wind is blowing the right direction, you can hear the crowd from miles around.
But the vast majority of football stands have roofs that slope upwards don't they? They don't seem to have much problem keeping the noise in. For me it's that the west stand is so low and far back that that's where the sound escapes. Coating the underside of the ponty end roof in light weight sound reflecting acoustic panels would be a good idea, deflect the sound back down below the west stand
Stadiums way too open and badly designed, a lot of the new stadiums are designed with acoustics in mind, Spurs and the New York stadium to name a few. Have you been in the NY when Rotherham score? Sounds like there's 20k in there not 10k.
That would be easily fixed though with a new west stand with the roof close to the pitch and filling in the corners even if it's just with full height advertising boards
Been watching a few EFL games on the tv recently and I know it’s not the same as being there but the atmosphere has sounded dead- Bristol City v Blackpool being the latest example - like a ghost town. I think we sell ourselves short sometimes - most home fans at most games are quiet imho.
Well I've always said scone like 'stone', and see scone like 'gone' as posh. But i found out recently some take the opposite view. So who knows... Scone/stone for me
