Now Wycombe have been dispatched of, we can focus on Tuesday night and the first of our 3 rescheduled games. The bookies have Wednesday as early narrow favourites, largely based on their extra days rest, best away record in the league, and of course with them being league leaders. As has been widely reported in the local media, the Owls haven't lost a league game since the 4th October, when a late Sam Cosgrove winner saw Plymouth open up a 5 point gap back to 3rd placed Wednesday. Away from home, it's 10 unbeaten for the Hillsborough outfit (6 wins, 4 draws), although they've hardly blown teams away in that time. In that 10 game spell, they haven't scored more than twice in a game, and have only beaten Cambridge by 2 clear goals. With all that being said, they have amassed 34 points from just 16 games away. Our record over Wednesday at Oakwell this century isn't great. Since the year 2000, we've met 12 times, winning 3, drawing 5 and losing 4. Prior to our last meeting (a 2-1 defeat), there were 4 consecutive 1-1 draws. Our last victory was 8 meetings ago when Iain Hume and a Campbell-Ryce penalty saw off 10 man Wednesday, despite a Leon Clarke penalty to narrow the gap. I mentioned in a thread earlier that both us and Wednesday have a tendency to score early goals. We've scored 21 times in the first half hour of games this season, only Wednesday have scored more (26), including 15 in their last 14 matches. Of those 21 early goals, 12 have been at home compared to 10 away for Wednesday. In terms of goals conceded in the first half hour, we have conceded just twice at home and Wednesday have conceded just twice away. The game could be decided early. According to radio Sheffield, Wednesday are experiencing an injury crisis at present. They could be without George Byers, arguably their most influential player. Josh Windass and Lee Gregory were also mentioned as possible doubts for the game. Thankfully, we appear to have remained injury free in the second half of the season, and are starting now to enjoy a bit of strength in depth. Of course, this is likely to be the toughest game of the season so far, however I feel like I say that every week, and yet, we keep turning out results. I'm going for a 1-0 win to the reds, with Adam Phillips scoring early in the second half, and the reds withstanding a late barrage to close the gap on Plymouth and Ipswich.
Brilliant as usual, mate. A rare trip to football for me, I’m taking a dee dar & his boy, lift home in his Range Rover. Tough game, so I’m not getting giddy about this one. 4-1 to the Reds, a late consolation for them.
I'm out all day tomorrow and expecting a busy one at work Monday so I thought I'd get it out tonight while still on a high.
0-2 Largely dominant but fail to find a breakthrough after Wednesday score on the brink of half time, then breakaway in the last 5 minutes on the counter.
Sold out crowd. The biggest derby game in years. The 2 best teams in the league. Class strikers on show. Atmosphere is going to be brilliant….. 0-0 all over it.
