For the younger posters who may not know, Martin was a speedy full back equally at home on the right or left (though most games were at left back). He was sold to Newcastle United for £50,000 at the same time as Anton Otulakowski left for West Ham United for £65,000, in the Autumn of 1976.

Those two sales laid the foundations for us to eventually splash out £55,000 on a former England international forward coming to the end of his career at Elland Road. This was big money for us at the time, but what an inspired bit of business it was.

    RIP Martin Gorry.

Sad news. As POR says he and Otulakowski paved the way for Allan Clarke and the resurgence of the club. Many thanks Martin.

Although he only played for us briefly I remember him well as a cracking left back. As others have said, his and Anton Otulakowski’s sales laid the foundation for Allan Clarke’s arrival.
    RIP Martin….

Did we sack Illey to get Clarke in or did Clarke play under Illey?

I think Iley left to take the Blackburn job if I remember correctly. Clarke replaced him as player manager.

    Clarke arrived after Iley left.
Iley got an unfair treatment by the fans. He did a good job but Clarke transformed the club.

I really rated Gorry , a really talented full back who I thought would go on to great things at Newcastle but it didn"t quite work out up there but when we talk about our favourite players of different eras Martin was on my list , RIP old lad , respects to your family .

He was an exciting full back to watch. I thought he'd go on to greatness, but didn't make it that far in the English game. It seems like he made a good life for himself in Australia. Very sad to hear of his passing. RIP.

RIP Martin...condolences to his family no age 68 in the grand scheme of things....I wonder how many remember him once scoring ( ponty end goal )from just before the half way line (West stand side) .he won the ball near the corner flag ( kop end ) ran towards the half way line looked up, the keeper was off his line ...get in ...first time I ever witnessed a goal like it ...think the papers reported that he had crossed the half way line when he hit it....but they were wrong he was definitely in his own half.
When Beckham scored a similar goal the papers were all over it but i recall thinking that it wasn't a patch on Martins...
    RIP fella
