I know 3 ST holders who won’t be there. It would have been 4 as I wasn’t planning on going but for totally unplanned non football related reasons I’m in Wombwell for a few days so actually going to an evening game at Oakwell under the lights for the first time in years.
If you have an empty seat next to you tomorrow then you will be allowed to name and shame the missing person on Wednesday.
Give the club some credit for once . Good marketing to sell out the seats available. All it needs now is for them that turn up. Make some noise. Big game this one.
When did we last have a sellout? I was there on a Tuesday night with 38K other people to see us beat Manchester City when I was at college.
Me too. First game I ever went to with my dad. I was 6 at the time and never actually saw owt of the match.
Apologies if this has been touched upon on another thread, but why is it that we don't open the other side of the West stand anymore? I remember years ago we had it open to away fans. In fact, I remember Wednesday filling both the North and half of the West at one point. Would love it if we could get that stand fully open for days like today.
Main reason is not enough demand from Fans and it costs less to steward half a stand than a full one. Also we took away the bogs at the north end to make way for the media centre so now it can’t be opened easily. Pretty sure if we were selling out most weeks we could find a way to open it again but there hasn’t been a need
If you mean the League Cup game with that tremendous header from Trevor Aylott then it was only 33,000 packed in. We had a 38k crowd against Man Utd when Best, Law and Charlton ran us ragged. Since then though the crowds have been limited year by year as it got more "dangerous" to stand packed together on the terraces (allegedly). Now we are talking about a crowd of 18,000 being a "sellout". Great effort, obviously, especially with it being on Sky, but still a bit sad that we can never again see a 30,000 plus crowd at Oakwell.
The biggest crowd I ever stood in was 23,000 v Stoke in the cup. Granted I was only 11, but it was still absolutely mental. How they squeezed nearly double that in I'll never know. Even the next round against Everton had 10k more. Luckily we had seats.
Yes I often wondered how we managed to get over 30,000 in the ground but it happened now and then. Even worse was that several parts of the ground had shale slopes without terracing. How we managed on that I don’t know! I was at that Man Utd game but was too young to take it in properly. These were Georgie Best’s early days but the star quality was there. Unfortunately I was jammed up against the back wall of the Ponty End first half so hardly saw anything. Luckily I managed to get a decent spot on the Kop second half so managed to see everything.
Based on what they had in the away stand at Blackpool last season, it probably wouldn't be difficult to get the bare minimum in if the demand was there. Pretty sure they just had portaloos and a pop and crisp stand at one end of that temporary stand.
