Been having a little trawl through Owlstalk to gauge the mood a day or so after the game. Mostly pretty fair stuff, a lot of which I agree with - only one winner at 2-2, we rode our luck at times etc etc..... But then I chanced on this little gem
I think we caused them problems when we weren't trying to defend a lead. Very direct team going on that 2nd half just long balls to smith. Not knocking it they have some good players and will go up. Out of Plymouth Wendy's and Derby we have scored 11 conceded 3 so we can't be that ****.
I'm gonna say it now, it's going to come down to a last day shoot out, whoever gets the better result, us v Pboro, them v Derby as to who gets the 2nd auto place. That's going to be such fun.
Clearly the guy is an idiot. We can play fluid football, & prefer to, but we got two early goals & Wednesday deployed hoofball tactics of which we largely defended well against. There was no real midfield battle as it was often bypassed. When we needed to score we did, we scored 4, they only scored 2. Hence the best team won.
I watched the full match replay last night and the "penalty" would have been harsh to say the least. Thomas was moving his arm down towards his body to avoid the ball hitting it. Having said that VAR would probably given it...
The pass through for the first was world class from Mads. 2nd was their own doing, forced from our press. 3rd came from our signature edge of box passing, 4th was perfect counter attacking. 4 different types of goal build ups. Wednesday could learn a lot from it, but it's Wednesday, can't teach technical football to 40 year old cavemen
Mads has mastered the art of two hands firmly behind the back, putting himself at the mercy of wherever the ball lands. Bobby needs a bit more work
I reckon that's a good summation. I think you're right, we didn't get chance to play our usual fluid football due to the nature of the game. It was very scrappy at times. We were really up against it for large periods. We defended for our lives. And we STILL won 4-2
I think it would have been harsh. Seen them given but his arm is low, he doesn’t move towards the ball as such with it and even after watching the slow mo replay a lot it still isn’t 100% clear what part of the arm it hit - it looks low slowed down but live and at full speed it looked very much like it could have come off the shoulder. We wouldn’t ever be given that, would we? An opposition centre back would have to catch it in both hands and drop kick it over the east stand roof before we’d get a penalty, let’s face it.
We attacked them with pace when we needed to and showed their vulnerability. This was deliberate and no fluke. It’s no coincidence that when we did this Bannan was nothing but a passenger, but when we backed off he came back into it. Duff alluded to it after the match about they highlighted the age of their squad etc. Some call it tactics/game management others call it poor play.
If it's fluid play that Wednesday fan wants, he should watch a team where the player in the middle of the back three moves forward into the opposition half, down the left channel and plays a perfectly weighted through ball into the box. Or where the centre back / left back finds himself in the middle of the penalty area to tuck in another goal...
Be wary of calling a team poor then losing to them (home & away) cos the question then is.... " well how sh*te are you then".......
Can't see it think they will go up there run isn't a hard one now. I think it's us or Ipswich for 2nd.
With the run of fixtures Wednesday and Plymouth have, and the form us and Ipswich are in, it’s hard to imagine any of the teams having less than 92 points at the end of the season. To not go up on that points tally would be both unusual and very unlucky.
Wednesday obviously didn't do their homework. Barnsley are fast starters and Duff's policy of using 4 or 5 subs makes us strong finishers.
