As a self employed tradesman, experience has taught me to largely avoid working for friends and family. That said, you can’t discount loyal customers becoming friends. It’s unavoidable, but it’s also a fact that you will lose some of the older ones along the way.

One such customer turned friend has just lost his battle with cancer. I only saw him a short while ago, so the timing is a shock to all.

We got on well because we had so much in common. Beer, curry and love of music for starters but he was also a BFC season ticket holder, having supported the reds since the 1960s.

I think he was born in Royston and lived there all his life, and he taught at Darton, so some may posters may have known him and his twin brother, David, who was also a teacher.

Such a sad loss to a cruel disease.

RIP Brian Lomas. You will be sadly missed.

My memory is saying English teacher but I may be mistaken. I didn’t know his first name. All our teachers were either Mr, Miss or Mrs.

An absolutely lovely man - good friend of my Dad as they taught alongside each other for 25 years and both lived in Royston through that period. For many years we all went to the match together. I think I'm right in saying Brian had an unbroken run of about 60 years as a season ticket holder.

Sincere condolences to Brian's family and friends.

Both brothers and their wives were teachers, but not sure if they all worked at the same school.
