    Hi All,

Not been round Barnsley on a night drinking proper for some years now. Off out tomorrow with a couple of lads from work and tbh, not even sure where anyone goes anymore. Where do most people end up?

    Any recommendations most welcome.

    Thanks.

Depends on your age really. The more mature tend to start off up at the Tin oyle, Pavillion, etc and work down onto Shambles street/ market hill area. If you go down to the new shopping area, there’s the Salthouse and The Botanist for starters. The Garrison usually has live music. Then there’s the usual bars such as Soul Bar, The Irish bar etc

I generally go up the Arcade and then on Market Hill. Loads to go at in the new part of town too. Barnsley's great for drinking at the minute.

I was last in town 3 or 4 weeks ago on a Friday night and it was dead, with many bars closing early. We may have been unlucky and gone to the wrong places at the wrong time of course but it was all quite underwhelming.

If you're not over 55 you won't fit in..same people going in town that were going round 30 years ago.. they're abit like ghosts but still alive stuck in a loop the returns them to the same places again and again
I feel it's quite sad people trying to hold on to something that's long long gone..

If people enjoy it, going out having a drink with friends and family, whats so sad about that? More power to them.

So if you're over 55 you shouldn't go into town to socialise and enjoy a drink or a nice meal?
Not sure I get that one......

this saddens me..Fridays used to be as busy as Saturdays…..I’m 40 and during my late teens and 20’s town used to be banging from Wednesday through to Saturday…

It's like that in Pontefract. There used to be one run in Pontefract. Start off on Horsefair in any of the pubs there. Work your way into the Market Place and then up to Bar 12 or Malt Shovel in Corn Market and then on to Bigfella's or Kikos.

Then about 2000 ish. The Green Dragon started doing £1 a drink student nights on a Tuesday and the younger end started off at that end of town but came out later. So now it's Bar 12 or Liquid (whatever it's called now). Over to the Malt Shovel and then longer in Bigfella's for the younger end. There's a more avant garde clientele on Ropergate where a lot of the old banks and shops have been converted in Bistro's and Micro pubs.

That'll die a death though because people haven't got pockets big enough for artisan taps.
