You would think the primary focus for a steward was to be neutral and avoid confrontation. Today it would seem a number of stewards were the complete opposite. 1 bloke (with the dodgy beard) itching for a fight and was basically stopped by other stewards 1 woman baiting the crowd (she got it back in spades) and finally, in the car park at the end, one t0sser, shouted "loser" at us as we were leaving. (No incitement at all but even if there has been, be a professional, man). Surely, there is a recruitment problem?
All I saw from the stewards was helping people to get to the wing of the stand where I was by opening the gates to let them out in front of the stand. What I also saw (and heard) was stewards asking us to move towards the wings to let people in the centre where there was probably quite a crush. Something which was sadly completely ignored.
I’ve taken the unusual step (1st time ever) of writing to Burton Albion saying the Stewards were the best I’ve ever experienced!! (And I’ve been to Charlton a few times!) The Supervisor (huge bloke, black baseball cap) was outstanding in how he, and the team I saw him directing, behaved towards the Barnsley fans - particularly the kids. A situation I’m afraid, that wasn’t reciprocated. I felt sorry for some of those kids who are going to have to go through life with the quality of some of the parenting I saw.
Found everything about Burton fantastic. 99.9% of stewards were fine and having banter with the fans.
Personally I've no issue with the stewarding. They were polite and helpful. Our fans in general could have done more to help the situation. There was approximately 100 fans stuck on the concourse who could have been accommodated if people had just made the effort to move a step forward
There were two incidents, two different idiots, same result. As I said in another thread the referee must have seen what was happening so I would have liked to see a gesture towards them on the lines of "I'm pointing at my watch and am putting three fingers up to indicate three extra minutes". But he was a coward incapable of making a correct decision all through the match. In a long list of incompetent referees this season he just about tops it.
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. We were in the seated bit, and the behaviour of some of our fans for the entire match, and also both before and after, was embarrassing. I personally didn't see any stewards acting aggressively, however I did see a number of fans being absolute bell ends towards them for no apparent reason. Obviously I can't comment on anything else anyone saw or heard.
The big bouncer steward at the front and the young blonde girl with the blackeye were a disgrace and if it wasnt for some very patient and understanding barnsley fans there could have been a lot of trouble because of those 2. They shouldnt be commended , they were as poor as i have ever seen and got away with it today.
I was in the seats towards the home fans. The ‘stand up sit down’ thing reared its ugly head again with one lad being asked to go to the back if he wanted to stand. He then spent the whole game goading his fellow supporters because they weren’t singing or standing up. I hope he feels pleased with himself when he sobers up.
I'm not sticking up for our fans, as I know some aren't little angels, but just felt that the three mentioned officials were not in the right job. I have to admit, the senior steward did seem good from what I saw (moving certain stewards on, calming the situation etc).
Also, and this isn't anything to do with stewards - the amount of people parading up and down in front of the seats throughout the entire match was infuriating. I'm sure some of em thought they were on some kind of fashion catwalk. Not even watching the game. Why can't people just sit down and watch the 'kin match?
I found the stewards ok obviously something had happened between some of our fans and them. But whatever it doesn't sit right with me singing personal insults at the women steward at the front for 10 minutes about her weight yeah she was laughing about it but it's not nice.
That's not what they go for, is it? The football taking place is just a hindrance that interrupts their drinking time.
