You may not have said their fans should feel anything. But not sure how they can enjoy it. How does that work ? I think the scenes at the end show that one.
Maybe have a read again. I’m on about our fans. Their fans are enjoying it, as they should, their teams just won a league title. But fans of Barnsley supporting a team that have benefited from huge financial backing and a media circus seems very against the grain of what a lot of us are so proud about our club for. None of my initial post has anything to do with the Wrexham fans, only our fans and their response to the situation and Wrexham as a club. If I was a Wrexham fan now, I’d have drunk as much beer as I could fit in my body and be running around North Wales dressed as Deadpool.
What. ? The same owners who sat in the ponty with the fans taking megaphone with em. It's happened since time began and end of season celebrations. It was their last home game and they won the league. Party time mate. I think concentrations should be aimed at dodgy owners. Rich money launderers. Human rights ignoring owners. That would take clubs into a european super league if they had their way.
I’m really proud that our club has won a major trophy, been in the top flight of English football and spent more seasons in the 2nd tier than anyone else by a considerable margin. I’m proud that our club still keeps the town’s roots at it’s centre. I’m proud that the club still plays at Oakwell and that the ground is still called that despite the fact we could have sold the naming rights years ago. And we’ve done all of that, on a budget much smaller than teams around us in both league and geographical sense. We aren’t a fashionable team and we get very little recognition or respect from a lot of the footballing world, but we continue very much in our own way. And I wouldn’t swap that for anything.
Point taken I did misread it. Apologies. But their are much bigger clubs out their that i have taken a dislike to as pointed out in my reply to dream boy. Wigan and wimbledon were the stuff of dreams. Fairy tale even. But both bankrolled. Their fans enjoyed the ride while it lasted. Sadly Wimbledon were shafted. Wigan not so much. But have become an established championship/league 1 side. How long it will last with constant changes of ownership is anyones guess. As for the big media circus. Why not. They had the right people to take advantage.
I respect your views - Wrexham have succeeded because they had huge financial backing - the successful teams all have huge financial backing. What we have seen is the wealthy clubs rising to the top. Without the finances smaller teams will suffer. The dichotomy we have with BFC is whether we want the club to continue as you want and probably not progress or would we prefer to have massive financial backing with the likelihood of being more successful.
I never said I didn’t want the club to progress. I like that we’ve stayed true to ourselves. There’s still plenty the club can do better in how it is run to maximise what we have available to us. It’s just little things that stick out to me and make proud of us as a club. There’s plenty of success stories in football without huge financial backing. It’s all about comparison. We spent more on agents fees than Wrexham last season, but we are 3rd tier club and we were a 2nd tier club last season. Wrexham are out spending clubs 2 leagues above them. It’s like us outspending half the Premier League, playing Danny Ings up front and then everyone being told how brave and inspiring we are because we’ve put 8 past Port Vale and Forest Green every other week. Wrexham have massively overspent considering the level they are at. Running a club successfully and taking advantage of well earned finances isn’t the same as receiving millions of pounds in non league football over the space of two years and walking to a title in a League where a lot of teams have only just recently stopped being part time.
That's what annoys me the most, when people keep calling this sort of thing a fairytale etc. Its not, and it wasn't either when Blackburn and Wigan and Fulham and Brighton and Reading and Bournemouth (to name just a few), all bought their way up the leagues because of a mega rich owner. Yes ok they were fans who wanted the best for their clubs, but this mob aren't. And they don't have any association at all with Wrexham or with Gt Britain. That's why I'm sure it will all come collapsing down eventually, one day!.
No worries and I get your point about other clubs as well, especially with the amount of dodgy and dislikeable owners knocking around including our recently departed pair of clowns. The only thing I’d say about the media is that they haven’t exploited a potential market for, they’ve simply just latched onto the star power of their owners. But at the end of the day, it’s football, it’s just what seems to happen now.
Let's be perfectly honest here. The only reason we've "stayed true to ourselves" is because we've had no other option. Like you I'm proud of our history and achievements but it does make me cringe when the "we're more genuine fans" line is trotted out. We're no different or better than any other club's fans. Just a diverse collection of human beings who share a common love for their particular team.
Good post mate, agree that we have never had any choice but to stay true to ourselves as some say.....however I would definitely welcome genuine wealthy investors into my club in order to progress up the leagues and see the type of success I would have never dreamed of in over 50 years of following the reds!......can’t see it happening but I live in hope
Well money talks.. on a forum where the holy think that owners putting money in, out of their own pocket, should be banned. I will read the replys on this thread with great interest.
The root of my gripe is not really at Wrexham as a club or at their fans. It’s the media circus that’s building up around it all. Since when did anyone winning the National League make news at 10? BBC were reporting on it as a fairytale, which it’s clearly not. They’ve won a league with budget christ knows how many times bigger than the rest. Where’s the fairytale in that? Feel sorry for Notts County, 105 points with a game to play and still might not get promoted.
I’ll be honest I was hoping Notts County upset the odds. Agree with comments about the media. They should walk that league (which they would have done to be fair without NC’s unbelievable run of form). It’s a non story for me. Clubs buy success at all levels, which is fine, professional sport by its very nature can never be a level playing field. I really struggled with the ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ series. I find their fan base to be very self entitled and Wednesday-level delusional. Two thirds of them that have filling the ground week in week out this season and last have been nowhere to be seen for the last 10 / 20 years. Now suddenly everyone talks about this ‘amazing fan base’. Nah, most are fickle band wagon jumpers who’ll go back to ‘supporting’ Man Utd or Liverpool from their armchair the minute it gets tough.
