Student nurse daughter has placement at Stockport Hospital - should start at 9 - travelling from Barnsley. Is Woodhead/Tintwistle the best route with the holdups at Tintwistle-Hume or is the longer route via Holmfirth better. On the Woodhead/Tintwistle route at what time does the traffic star backing up - if she started at 7 would it be a clear run ? Thanks.
Always use the Holmfirth route. You can bet you would always drop behind a truck or two over woodhead at that time of the morning.
You need to be passing the flouch roundabout at 5-45 to get any kind of decent run over the tops.. over the isle of sky is better but still very busy around Aston.. ether way it's not great mate tbh.. Tell her to give herself an hour n half at that time of morning
A room to rent in Stockport is £500+ pcm in a shared house. Another option might be train from Meadowhall - £109 for a weekly season ticket or £418 for a month but no need to sit in traffic or worry about the weather...
Not at all, just the added stress of whether or not Transpennine Express will actually run any reliable services . I commute daily with them from Slaithwaite to Leeds and it's an absolute **** show!
Tis why I said nurse digs. Not private. Mrs was resident in Beckets then St Helen's. From 1975 to 1977. Tbh i don't know if stockport have em.
I would just like to congratulate her, whatever she decides on, its gunner be full of ifs an butts, look at all the pro's an cons, but in my opinion, less travelling will be less stressful, good look lass an enjoy.
It's absolutely not. Have you actually been, or is this like the Barnsley team where you criticise from afar? Massive redevelopment of the town - great bars, restaurants, cafes etc. Mill developments, galleries, green spaces, pedestrianised zones. Sunday Times last month voted it one of the best places to live in the North West.
Woodhead is getting closed loads lately as they've been working on that little bridge just after you leave Barnsley MBC travelling west for the last million years. There's been issues/work going on after nearly every Tuesday night game this season. Given a clear run Woodhead is definitely quicker but it's absolutely beset by issues; my advice would be not to set a standard route but use Google maps before you set off as both ways can be massively variable with traffic.
Tend to agree with this - the route from Sheffield to Stockport is relatively decent - BUT - it's about a mile and a half bus ride up the A6 from Stockport station to Stepping Hill and the traffic is bad at that time in a morning particularly as you go past the Grammar school/Stockport school, so you need a good half hour from arriving at Stockport to getting to Stepping Hill.
Check route on waze prior to setting off ,occasionally Woodhead is quicker as long as its 5 45 start. Traffic lights still over Woodhead but not too much of a delay. Mottram main delay if you get there after 7 am. Over Saddleworth Moor slightly longer but a nicer drive . Bit longer too.
Was in Stockport last week, an as i was walking past a tarn centre pub, i saw an old man with a fishing rod, fishing in a puddle, i said fancy a drink to get him out of the cold, were drinking our Double whisky's, an i thought i'll humour him, an asked how many he'd caught, he turned looked at me an grinned, an said your the 8th so far.
I last went in 2004 and it was like the wild west. I've heard it's changed a lot since then. My North-West correspondent at work, who has given me some tips on about 20(!!) different places in and around Manchester where I could possibly move to, described Stockport thus (after I said I believe it's all cosmopolitan now): 'Stockport town centre is a little soulless in my view. But their horrendous new shopping complex won a carbuncle award - it's that hideous! Hat museum and its terrifying mannequins is still there. Can't say it's cosmopolitan but it fills a hole.'
