This is our second highest points haul (86) and still one league game to go.

our record is 91 with what some might say a more established and expensive squad than now.

Considering what Michael Duff has had to work with and the squad he has assembled this has to be acknowledged as a fantastic achievement so far.

    and still not over yet.

It’s been a fantastic season. I read through some of the comments in the match day thread yesterday after the game and considering the season we’ve had/are having, some posters were way over the top. Although I know emotions run high during games.

If we don’t go up through the playoffs and Duff was still here, I reckon we’d possibly be favourites to go up next season. Duff is the key for me. Keep him and I’ll be confident but lose him and it’s another rebuild.

Sadly, that's always the way with us. We're only seen as a stepping stone to somewhere better.

It has been a great season. Any one of us would have taken 4th at the start of the season.

We are now in the mixer...

I think I’m in denial it will happen this time. Might have to close my eyes and ears over the summer if we remain in league 1!

I prefer to think of it as a four-slice toaster, where three slices are burnt to a cinder and one pops up nicely done. :)

86 points would have seen us promoted automatically in 8 of the last 17 League One seasons (ignored the 19/20 season as it went to PPG due to Covid) and as the OP mentions, we achieved 91 in one of the seasons where it wasn't enough.

Plymouth and Ipswich have just been unreal, as have Sheff Wed and ourselves. I think the club have acknowledged that the unsettled summer hasn't helped, so we've always been chasing, but given what Ipswich and Plymouth have done it's likely we would still have been in the Play Offs.

Some of the most enjoyable seasons I've watched Barnsley have been at this level, and whatever the final outcome, this season is up there with them. It's a credit to everyone - the players, the head coach and his staff, the board and us folk in the stands - that we've achieved what we have done. Not getting promoted, in sporting terms anyway, would not be a failure in my eyes.

Hotel for the play off final is booked.

Its an interesting point that, how many fans would say that getting to the Play offs is an achievement to begin with, regardless of what happens in them.
I know we never enjoy the Championship experience anymore, because we're always struggling to compete and in relegation scraps. Apart from the single one-off Val season of course.
But I still want us to do that, rather than stay around for ages in Lg One. I still hope we can go up and be a bit more competitive next time in the Championship.

The aim was promotion. It's a failure so far. If we don't win the Play-Offs it's been a failure. The aim is promotion as soon as possible. In League 1 the aim is promotion, not consolidation.

    Unbelievable Ponty!.
After the appalling season we had, surely nobody was expecting or rather demanding promotion like your suggesting there. And your going to call this season a failure after what Duff has done, and the 'cards' he was dealt ?.

    Sorry thats ******
Ive no idea what target Duff was set when hired but I dont believe it was promotion ( which we may still achieve). Given the state of the club and the offloading of our star players many of us would have expected mid table to be a decent return this season. Personally I said top 10 would be a good result , True some said the minumum we should be aiming for was the playoffs but they were the minority To finish fourth with 86 or more points is quite a good result, it was our start thats cost us automatic but it did take Duff a few months to turn us around, hampered by major injuries to Thomas and McCarthy just as we were getting some results together.
Yes the aim is promotion but a realistic target was top 6 reaching that with games to spare is not a failure unless you are based in S6

I think a lot of people got a bit giddy when we beat Derby/Plymouth/Wednesday at Oakwell, and then threw their toys out when we weren’t winning every single game. More than likely a lot of these people don’t go to the games.
