Can draw the conclusion that we won the play offs when we went into it unbeaten. But that’s 4 campaigns over 23 years for one club. Is that a trend across the board? No idea. I don’t think momentum is the right word. Form is the issue. If we’d lost yesterday because their keeper had a stormer, I wouldn’t be too concerned. But he only had one save to make that I can remember.
Yesterday and our general run-in this season reminded me of 2000. Automatic promotion had slipped away so we had 3 meaningless games at the end of the regular season, including the 0-2 defeat at home to Crewe, which was extremely similar to yesterday's match. We all know what happened at St Andrews a week later.
The worry for me yesterday, was how easy it was for them to get between our lines. They countered at will. Without our press working, we look very vulnerable. Our best can beat Bolton. Our best can win the final. But our recent performances simply aren’t going to be good enough.
I don’t think there’s a massive gulf in our levels of performance compared to when we went on that great unbeaten run. I said then I didn’t think we were amazing but it was just a habit and we had belief. We’re now out of that habit at the worst possible time (except against really poor sides). Although we weren’t great we were unlucky yesterday, a million decisions went against us and we were the better side by an absolute mile, but we’re in a rut. And you can’t turn it on and off like a tap. Of course it turns again at some point. We just need it to be on Saturday! A 2 or 3 goal loss there and the seasons over. Gun to head I’m saying a Wendy V Bolton final. BUT…… the play offs can be crazy and owt can happen. We just need a bit of luck, and to defend our near post better from corners!
True. But the way I'm looking at it is that we've had a mini pre-season, but our opposition have actually been playing at 100%. Could actually do us good.
The one thing the two unsuccessful campaigns had in common was that we lost to a team that had our number during the regular season. Momentum had nothing to do with it, we'd have fancied our chances against any of the other teams bar Swansea the other year, and against Bolton rather than Ipswich in 2000. Sadly, we're playing the one team we'd rather have avoided in the semi final again. 2016 was an anomaly. We didn't win the play offs because we had momentum, we won them because we were the best team. We just gave the rest of the league a half season head start that season.
Go in to the play offs unbeaten in our last five and get promoted. Go in to the play offs with two defeats in our last five games as we are this season and we don't get promoted.
Go into the play offs in League 1 and get promoted Go into the play offs in the Championship don't get promoted.
History means nothing. Keith Brown cost us in 2000. 2006 how did we beat Swansea. 2021 we were rank outsiders anyway. It's how we perform on the day.
I've watched 2 games over the last few days . Huddersfield v Blades , curious with Warnock appointment. Town played like tigers as though they had something to play for and Blades going through the motions, thoroughly deserved the win. Yesterday I watched Peterborough play with the same fight , against a team that looked as though there was nothing to play for. Peterborough deserved the win overall. There's no way will we see the same Barnsley fc side in the next two games. There's all to play for now ,let's see the side we know who outplayed the league champions and the massives.
Dunno about that. We were within touching distance of top two and just put in really poor performances against Lincoln, Exeter & Burton. It's not like we didn't have anything to play for in those critical games. We had everything to play for, but simply weren't good enough. A few weeks ago, no one will have fancied us in the play-offs. Now I imagine no one fears us. Need a huge step up from recent performances, if we hope to get to Wembley. I doubt anyone would disagree with that.
Duff and his staff have their work cut out to get the squad back up to the heights of performance we've seen earlier. If Anderson is missing we are in serious trouble the defence without him have looked all over the place. Perform like they have in 4 out of the last 5 games and it will be L1 for at least another season and I fear it will be the last we see of Duff in the home dugout too. The fact we are in the playoffs is a bonus many of us didn't expect this season. It would be such a same though if the season fizzled out with the whimper of failure instead of the glory of success it deserves so COYR you just need to believe in yourselves and give it your all.
me too. I'm sure we'll be up for it and we've nothing to fear as we've beaten every team in them this season!
