When was the roof on the Brewery Stand extended to the whole length of the pitch?

 

Agreed. I've seen black and white images of oakwell before and grainy images of the town 100 years ago but seeing them so clean and in colour really helps me imagine what it used to be like. Will be a great trip down memory lane for some of our older members

 

It looks as if the ground was literally built on heaps of mud, though I'm hoping in reality it was a bit more stable. I'm also wondering if the rear of the Kop which was later covered in terracing was actually stood on at this point? I'm going to send the picture to my dad, although he started going in the early 60's, so quite a while after this was taken.

 

This is a fascinating image!

Few things..

1. It reminds me of my old Subbuteo set;
2. I love the parameter fence that goes all the way round;
3. Can't people just walk over the football field to Beevor Court?
4. So strange seeing the West Stand as the most 'modern'

I started in 1961 and I've stood on the Kop when it was still like this. IIRC the surface was colliery spoil or very similar.
When our match was crap we used to stand at the top and face the other way. Coop Sports used to play on the pitch behind and they were often more entertaining!
I'd also add that by 1961 the Brewery Stand had been extended to its full length.

 

Note the penalty arcs on the edge of each area are different sizes. I've noticed this before on old pictures. Reckon the groundsman was a bit hungover when he first marked it out

 

Great to see the Old Brewery. I remember the football pitch at the back of the brewery stand.
Also, when was the Social club built? noticed it’s not on that photo

 

No floodlights in those days, no social club yet, but the West Stand bogs look to be there in all their glory.

 

Hadn't clocked the absence of floodlights! This is where my old Subbuteo differs..

 

The "hump" on The Kop was cinders as opposed to the uniform concrete tiers lower down. When The (Spion) Kop was seated the "top bit"was already concreted over. Me and my dad went in that end (not where we normally went) to get tickets for the Man Utd game in the cup (in 1964?), the "famous" game where we had an attendance of 14000+? for a Division 3 (League 1) game against Wrexham.

 

Oh! And as I recall we won 3-1

 

When I was about five I spent more time digging bits of shale out of the top of the kop end than watching the match!

 

You're right, the D at the Kop end extends the full width of the goal area (20 yards).

I can't see any "facilities" anywhere in the ground other than the famous West stand bogs. Did everyone just piss up the wall?

 

I don't remember any bogs on The Kop either....

 

No health and safety ,walkway up the mucky paths into ponty,don’t want white vans on

 

On the brewery stand it was piss against the wall at the bottom, or underneath the stand itself.

 

Underneath the stand? So do you mean that the base of the stand was not solid concrete?

 

There was a "primitive", to put it politely, stone-built, "construction" at below the Brewery Side, but it housed about 4 people - most people didn't bother - it made the West Stand Bogs look "big time"
