Wow, I'd never even considered that. Obviously I knew that it was 2 up, 2 down for a long time but it had never crossed my mind how relatively little time passed between the introduction of 3 up, 3 down and the playoffs. Out of interest, was the 4th division 3 up, 3 down when the rest of the league promoted and relegated 2?

Couple of fun facts on play offs:

Blackpool and Huddersfield are the only teams to have won all play off finals in each of the 3 leagues
Blackpool are the most successful team in the play offs
Ipswich have lost more semi finals than others (7)
Ipswich lost 2 years on away goals and as a result campaigned successfully for these to be abolished.
Teams in red & white stripes have contested 37 finals with only Brentford beating Swansea in 20/21 & Sunderland last yearwinning.
1-0 is the most common result in a final

Yeah I have to agree, Sheffdy Wendy were unlucky not to go straight up, with that points total. And its an insult that Peterbrough got to start on an even level, despite finishing 19 points behind them.
Teams know the rules etc, but it doesn't make it right. Maybe the Conference style one-off home legs is a 'fairer' idea.

No. It's always been four up and down between the 3rd & 4th tiers since they did away from the Division 3 North and South.

At the end of the day sport is about entertainment and nobody can doubt that the play-offs create more entertainment for fans.

3rd straight to final. 4th to 7th in a playoff would be fairer, giving 3rd a clear advantage .....

The Play offs are like a lot of things in life, great when they are invented, and it makes us wonder where they had been all those years.
Like when they made it 3 points for a league win in 1981, instead of just 2 points. Or when they made the back pass rule, in 1992. ;)

What about 5th v 6th, winner plays 4th, winner of that plays 3rd in the final?

I wasn't going to respond as I thought Id explained clearly but your implication suggests because I dont agree with the play offs per se I may therefore not like Barnsley being promoted under them. This line of reasoning is similar to a straw man supposition. I never said I didn't like Barnsley doing well, I simply said I didn't like the play off system. It exists therefore if Barnsley do well under the system all well and good. If Barnsley fail under the system that's a shame. Another comment in this thread seems to be 'all the teams knew the rules about play offs at the beginning of the season so why the big deal?'. That's not the point either. The point is one either agrees with the play off system or one doesn't. Some think they're a good idea and have explained why. I dont like them and have explained why. That's all there is to it.

Recall so many pointless and boring end of season games back in the day, the play off system has greatly reduced these.
To their credit I've not heard a Wednesday fan bairn about the system, accepting that they royally screwed up automatic promotion.
