I just wanted to share a story with you as it really made me laugh. If you look in the program for the Bolton home game you will see my grandad Peter Manterfield was mentioned. He passed away on our day of remembrance. He was 90 years old and quite frail and weak. We even joked that the final would have finished him off anyway. He's from Grimethorpe and got me supporting the reds at a young age. I'm probably one of the only Barnsley supporters in Southend/Essex. I started supporting them the year before we got promoted to the prem. I thought I was onto a good thing... We used to show grandad the highlights of games on our phones. My uncle and him would speak after every game Barnsley played in and if Barnsley lost, according to my grandad, we were robbed. He really hated Arsenal for something that happened years ago. Im sure someone on here can tell me why. So anyway my uncle, (also a red) went to see my grandad not long before he passed away. At this point he was very poorly. He arrived at my grandad pretty agitated and showed grandad the vs Burton highlights (and we all no what happened there). Grandad watched the handball incident and blurted out 'discusting' before promptly falling asleep. Maybe you had to be there, but it really has made me laugh. I read these forms often but don't get to involved. I think yesterday has brought me closer to the club and full respect to them for putting my grandad in the match program. I've always said, one year I'll come up to Barnsley, get a season ticket and really live the Barnsley life. And yesterday, we, as grandad would say 'were robbed' You redsss
Haha...great tale that. Let us know if & when you make it up to Oakwell and there's a pint waiting for you. You'll never leave....
Great story mate - I assume this is the reason why he hated Arsenal, read this thread. It isn't extremely long. I think that's why a lot of our older generation feel the same way towards them. RIP to your Grandad matey. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/arsenal.321936/#post-3112305
Loved reading that, cheered me up. No matter where you end up, this club keeps you hostage and it’s a lifelong tie.
And its a pleasure, my cousins used to give me their Tottenham shirts, they thought I'd join them! No chance, I went to Southend vs Barnsley (0-0) and I've been hooked ever since.
Thanks, I will have a read. He was a good bloke my grandad, he was from grimethorpe. He played against Tommy Taylor and Dickie Bird back in the day.
Enjoyed the read! You might be the only supporter in Southend now but you weren’t when I lived there - 1985-1994 - that’s if you were born at that time! Have been back to Roots Hall, the last two times Barnsley played there.
What a fantastic story to share with all your future generations bud. Woild have loved to see Tommy Taylor play live
