So surely when you get to know what’s currently happening, you need to be confident that it isn’t a lie?

I’ve been busy with work so haven’t been on here most of the day, but as soon as I saw a thread about Johnson I thought to myself, I bet Tyketical Masterstroke has chipped in suggesting the findings prove beyond all doubt that lockdown was wrong. Even though it makes no judgement about lockdown itself. Or even that he broke rules, he admits that freely. The judgement is on whether he knowingly broke the rules and therefore lied to parliament.

That doesn’t matter though. Why worry about that? TM did not disappoint. Gave a predictable response doing exactly what I thought, even quicker than I could have predicted.

Applause for consistency I guess, but you’d be absolutely shocking on just a minute TM.

I Can't get enough of dragging Boris further down into the gutter where he belongs tbh.
Just heard some of his constituents. On the radio. Saying it's a witch-hunt.. bless. Do they live in a feckin bubble.

It was the only verdict they could possibly come to. The vast majority of the population saw him lie time and again at the dispatch box. Open and shut case. Ironically, if he'd admitted what he'd done and said sorry to Parliament and to the people, he might still be PM now.

And this is the sad thing about it all. That the lies and contempt this government and this former PM have for rules, the law and the citizens they represent are so commonplace that people have ‘had enough’ of it all. Having a minister who repeatedly lies to Parliament is bad. In years gone by just the one lie would end their career. But this was repeated lying. And not by a minister, but by the Prime Minister, who was running the country through a global pandemic, a financial crisis and with a war in Europe, which he made sure he was heavily involved with, so desperate was he for a Churchillian style legacy.

We had a proven liar in charge of a government that handed billions of pounds worth of contracts to friends and cronies who set up non-existent companies, to provide non-existent equipment. Every single one of those contracts needs to be examined, and, where fraud is found, all parties involved should be criminally prosecuted.

And the government needs to put a stop to this man travelling to Ukraine in the name of the UK. He already has his legacy, and it isn’t a good one.

His lies did royally f*** us over though. There's politicians' lies, then there's Johnson's lies. Different League. And what makes it newsworthy is everyone now sees that he is the biggest liar Westminster's ever seen (which takes some beating). It took a good decade or so for everyone to realise, but it's now been proven without any doubt.

    Britain is a stupid country.

What?!? Who are ‘hardcore lockdowners’? As someone who has asthma, as well as reduced immunity following major spinal cord surgery to remove a tumour, I quite appreciated keeping away from people who had COVID when the transmission rate was very high and the death toll was rising, cos I didn’t fancy my kids losing their father, like my niece’s boyfriend did. Also, as an ex-A&E nurse, with many friends still working in A&E departments and the NHS in general, I quite like that the NHS didn’t collapse, because the situation in most hospitals was far, far worse than most people could imagine. Does this make me a ‘hardcore lockdowner’? And wasn’t the government acting (sort of) on advice from the experts? So Johnson was giving us information based upon this advice?

No, even if I am on of your ‘hardcore lockdowners’, and I’m happy to be so for a moment, I don’t feel embarrassed by this report. I am, however, happy that I have never had COVID and I’m still around to make my kids’ tea in a few minutes and then watch an Indiana Jones film with my son later, even if it’s the fourth one, which is a bit rubbish.

I would, however, feel embarrassed if I had helped Johnson to do something that has made the country and all of us worse off and severely restricts the opportunities for mine and everyone else’s children in the future, by falling for his lies, especially that big one on the side of the bus.

The worst thing is the Tory's all knew he was a liar because he always has been but voted him in as PM and continued to back him. Even now some of the less intelligent ones are still trying to defend the fat lying clown.

Utter disgrace. That sub human cretin will still receive £100kpa as an ex PM (as will that gutter snipe self serving bitch Truss), + us paying his legal fees + his "security" detail = I'm ashamed to be British. We are being ruled by a cess pit of "people" who have no regard for how they are destroying the fabric of what this ******* country stands for.

Lol, 'Covid deniers'. Exactly the sort of nonsense you've talked on this subject for three years.

I've absolutely no doubt you've avoided the early evidence given at the Covid 19 committee so far, but if you cared to look at it, one of the biggest criticisms so far is the absolute refusal of pretty much everyone concerned to consider the grievous societal harms caused by lockdowns.

The state of your level of hubris in the below post is indicative of the brick wall we faced:

    https://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/millions-of-us.290994/page-3#post-2467485

'Covid denier' indeed. Three years later and you're still just as full of hubris and just as ignorant in trying to shut down the debate.

And this trope that being concerned about the impact of locking down on the poorest communities is a 'right wing' stance is the tactic of many a person who can't argue their position on its merits.

'I don't agree with it therefore it's right wing'

Thanks for this post as i genuinely think its really thoughtful and heartfelt, and appreciate the counterpoints. It's a pleasure to have someone actually put some points rather than go "CoViD DeNiEr".

A few things to pick up on though if that's ok:

    1) By what measure do you say the NHS hasn't collapsed? Patient care is at its worst level in living memory. Waiting lists are through the roof as a result of services being stopped for long periods. Missed diagnoses of serious illnesses *as a result of lockdown* are coming through in the massive excess death rate we currently have.

That excess death rate is absolutely through the ceiling, at unprecedented levels outside of pandemic times. The NHS is an utter mess, and while a lot of that, i accept is due to factors independent of whether or not we locked down (however many years we've had of Tory rule being a bloody good start) it's a bit of a stretch to 'thank' the lockdown for the NHS surviving given the utter bloody mess its in at the moment.

    2) Fully respectful of your personal circumstances and understand why you would want to distance at times. However, I've always said that there should have been special protections afforded to the vulnerable. I do really empathise with your situation as someone myself who takes hardcore immunesuppressant infusions every 6 weeks, i just always felt that it would be really selfish of me to ask the world to shut down because of my personal medical misfortune. I wouldn't dream of preventing someone else's children from having a proper schooling just because I'm more susceptible to getting ill. That's my misfortune and I'll take measures to protect myself that don't impinge on others.

    3) I'm really glad you've not had Covid. And I'm glad you got to watch a film with your fourth kid, but it's a bit harsh you calling him rubbish ;-) But i suspect your not getting Covid has been largely because of the precautionary measures you took yourself rather than a function of lockdown. By November 2022, the ONS estimated that over 80% of the British population had had Covid. So if the aim of the lockdown was to stop folk getting Covid, then it failed, massively. Like - it literally barely stopped anyone getting it, in the long run.

    4) Your remark about Brexit - if that's aimed at me, that's more off target than a Callum Brittain long range shot. I think Brexit is nearly as stupid as I think the lockdown was.
