Remember him breaking through into the first team. One of those promising youngsters that didn’t quite make it here. Seems to have done ok in the game though. RIP Dave Wilkes
RIP David. A decent little player. Who was always going to struggle to hold down a place in a side that was awash with great quality midfielders in the era he played for us.
Wow that is my childhood touched again. Remember several school friends at Reserves games hoping to meet David Wilkes. Sad he’s gone so young. RIP.
Midfielder Baz. 81-84. Aged 17-21 Imagine trying to break into sides that to name a few, included.:- Glavin Banks McHale Ronson Barraclough Thomas.
Remember seeing Dave come up through the youth team in the late 70s early 80s. Had loads of injuries and never fulfilled his potential sadly. 59 is no age at all and puts a manager leaving well and truly into perspective for me
He played as a winger for us in the ubiquitous 4-4-2 that every team played. A mass of blonde hair, good looking lad. Clearly had a good understanding of football judging by the poignant write up from the Carlisle website. I did know he went there as a player but hadn't realised he'd gone in to coaching. Lovely write-up about him, hope his friends and family feel proud. They should do.
Very sad news and at no age at all. I'm pretty sure I must have seen him play but I really have no recollection of him. RIP
Crikey that is sad. Same age as me so hits home. Seem to remember him scoring twice on debut v Fulham on opening day of the season. Would’ve been 1983 I think as I remember it being the same day my dad got remarried. Someone may tell me different I guess. RIP Dave….
Dave and I played in the same youth teams growing up. We were apprentices at Barnsley together and were really good mates. To say he was a good looking lad understates it. His impression of Barry Murphy was spot on. Although I haven’t seen him for years news of his passing touches me deeply. Condolences to his family, RIP Dave you were a top lad and friend
Hi buddy A friend of mine was also at barnsley the same time and told me, he was lovely lad (and very good looking!)....He also once told me that during training big Mick once went straight through him and gave him a nasty injury. Can't remember if Collins was coach but allegedly made Macker train on his own for a week. Can you confirm this? Rip Dave Wilkes
Ah I remember now with Jay saying the blond locks ,good looking lad, that is so sad and like said previous the manager walking out is immaterial to passing at such a young age. RIP wilky
