Martin Devaney Hes had a season under Duff so must have learnt some new stuff Hes loyal. He knows how club is run and he knows the Squad Yes he did take over last few games other season but it was over and he had a **** squad so we really cant judge him on them For me id love to see him get offered Job
Counts for absolutely nothing. McLaren, Kidd, mullensten etc all assistant to Fergie yet all 3 of them are absolutely gash when it comes to management (barring McLarens spell at boro) In my experience you need someone to come in with a big presence who can galvanise a group of lads. Hecky situation was abit different, he was like a mate to that promotion squad, and it was a side that almost managed itself. Not to mention 7 of that 11 went on to play for sides higher up the leagues, premier league teams and even internationals. It was a serious squad that.
If he gets the job, everyone will want him to succeed, no doubt about it. I just worry what the outcome will be if doesn't. I don't want to see the fans turn on him and just become another sacked Barnsley manager. I also don't want to see him do well then get poached.
Sure fire way to for some of the fans on here to turn on him and the board if he flopped. Or when the inevitable happens. I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole. Neither would Mick McCarthy i reckon, for the same reason. I'd be happy for Disco to try elsewhere first (he's had one season as 1st team coach. Not head or assistant head coach). Then he'd allus be welcomed back If he failed. People in my view become too attached to certain individuals. It's why Bobby for me has a probable job for life in the role he has. And rightly so given his loyalty to the club. I don't think he would put that at risk.
not for me, replace a ‘rated’ manager with Disco and you get accusations of cheap skating by the board at the first blip, plus what clout has he got to bring in players who are presumably in demand elsewhere?
If i was MD I wouldn't touch it with a long barge pole. If it went badly, and it could easily do just that, he'd lose all the kudos he gained whilst a player. At least, he would amongst the more moronic element.
Would be a bit of a gamble for me, I'd rather play it safer but absolutely no guarantees whoever we choose so who knows what's best.
The more I think about it The more I think Darren Moore would be a good shout If only for a one year deal, although he would need to play high intensity pressing imho If that suits him…he’s the best man for the job, and sharpish
Wouldn't mind disco but I liked him as a player it will be sad to see him fail as a manager if he does, same with Moore I suppose. Be hard whoever takes over. We just need a fast and good appointment as we will be going back to training Monday and the window is open.
Perhaps I'm still feeling bitter, and I don't doubt Devaney has affinity towards our club. I think he cares about us fans, the club, the players etc. But this loyalty thing... Is he loyal through choice? Or is he loyal because nobody has come in for him?
Lose the first game Vs Port Vale and they'll get a bit more than cheap skate accusations.. Can't see too much patience knocking around come August somehow
I loved Devaney as a player and I think he's been great as a coach but personally wouldn't want him as manager. For a few reasons. Firstly, this division is weaker than last season. There's a good chance of top 2 this year with the right recruitment and manager, I personally wouldn't be confident going into the season with Disco in charge compared to a proven manager like Moore, Wilder etc. Who have been there and done it. Secondly, someone like that without a proven track record won't be as appealing for incoming players imo. A manager with a proven track record etc. Is surely more likely to get deals done and have more contacts to open doors for possible signings (as with Duff with Burnley lads last season). Finally, we are at a moment where we could bring an external hire in and they would have a full pre season to implement what they want and there are good options available. An internal hire isn't a bad option mid season to keep continuity like when LJ went bristol and Hecky stepped in, but not in close season for me.
He doesn't, the same as no-one knew if Alan Clarke, Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson, Paul Heckingbottom etc could do the head coach/manager job. In fact we've been less successful employing established coaches like Jim Illey, Mel Machin, Schopp, Asbaghi etc.
...so on that basis you want to see him get the job get promoted and not get poached . works for me.....or he gets us promoted, is offered a "bigger" job and turns it down. also works for me.
