Woodhead route is always based on time and i think midnight will be fine. However i would check for roadworks, there has been a tendency for them to pop up in various places over the last year or so. This shouldn't be a problem late if filtering lanes are there but sometimes they close parts of the route overnight.
Just arrived at Manchester Airport after setting off over Woodhead at 4am this morning. Totally empty. I reckon midnight would be fine.
Woodhead definitely the best choice, traffic lights now gone. M62 as been awquard late at night. Night closures near Saddleworth. Woodhead your best bet .
Woodhead is great at night just dont get carried away with yer speed theres more than a few air pins, back in theday the Sheep were the biggest problem.
I live a Barugh and use the woodhead although started going holmfirth way spectacular drive and scenery
Cheers everyone, appreciate the advice. I drove it recently in the day and was fine, just not done it at night. I'm a confident driver but good advice on the air pins Winker, noted.
Check with AA Roadwatch or similar before you set off - but it does depend which part of Manchester you are going to. I've found from the North west side that M60/62/1 is quicker than Woodhead provided the roads are open.
I was regional manager based in Manchester and did a daily commute for eight years. I always did Woodhead unless it was closed for snow when I would then use M62.
I reckon Woodhead is your best bet, I have not been on any motorway after 10:30pm at night in the last 6 months for more than 5-7 junctions without them closing lanes for night work - twunts.
I commuted for 7 years from Wombwell to Stockport going over Woodhead. Never had much of an issue. Should be a nice drive at that time of night.
