I've got a mixer bath tap with hot and cold sides both leaking. Not sure if whole tap needs replacing or if it's possible to just put some new rubber washers in or something. The tap is in a really awkward spot right up against a corner, and I've no idea how to get the bath side panel off. Any plumbers on the BBS, I'm happy to get a quote by PM to get it fixed. I can source a new tap or you can include it in cost, let me know if there are any takers Ta
You can almost certainly replace the washers but you need to know what type and size if the tap only turns 1/4 or 1/2 turn they will be ceramic type so you will need to repace the actual valve if it turns a few turns from off to fully on it will just be a standard washer but you will need to know the size. Its easy to replace one if you know what type and how to turn off the water to both hot and cold - usually there is an isolation valve in the pipe going to the tap but not always. if you arent confident just get a plumber / odd job person to do it for you though. you shouldn't need to replace the tap unless you want to
As stated should only be a case of replacing washers. Doesn’t sound serious. But if awkward best calling in a professional.
Personally I find it easier to replace the whole gland unit inside the taps than just the washers. Usually cost about between £5 - £7 each. If you can turn taps off, if not usually you can turn off your header tanks if not turn off at mains under sink in kitchen(usually), drain system replace units,!turn water back on.
If its a ceramic tap you need to replace the gland -if it has standard rubber washers its really easy to replace just the washer
Depends how old the tap is, used be a case of just changing the washers, nowadays may need to change the whole unit.
Just asked my plumber mate he says you definitively need to replace the whole bathroom , kitchen , or utility room depending where the tap is .
Thought my sink tap in the bathroom wanted washers replacing, but when the plumber came he told me they don’t have them in now so I just replaced the whole tap it wasn’t too dear £55 for tap and fitting.
Cheers fellers. Main problem is it’s jammed right up against two walls and I can’t get behind it or to one side, so guessing I’ll have to take bath panels off completely to get at it, which is a problem because the screws are bloody rusty
You could start by knocking out the two walls behind the tap. As my wife would say, it'll only take a few minutes. What you do after that I really don't know.
