I respect your opinion but for me the reason he plays sideways & backwards passes is simply because of the lack of other options , he would always try to complete a pass & sometimes there was a lack of movement in front of him & had to complete the short pass rather than take speculative punts up the field thus relying on players hopefully making the runs , you can look pretty stupid if players do not work hard off the ball & find the space . I am not sure if you were watching the reds in the eighties but Ray McHale was a player who sometimes used to get stick for getting caught in possession but it was simply because he was a footballer who always looked to pass the ball & would not simply kick it anywhere , he was a cracking player with excellent vision , whilst I am not suggesting that Kane is anywhere near the class that McHale was I can certainly see similarities in their styles & qualities .
I respect your opinion too. I was indeed watching the Reds in the 80s and for quite a long while before that. I remember McHale very well, and I agree that Kane's style is in some ways reminiscent of his. Kane, like McHale, rarely loses the ball, and, unfortunately for him, he does not have a Ronnie Glavin or Ian Banks to pass to. McHale often supplied Glavin with the ball which would enable Ronnie to charge forward and wreak havoc.
