I mean, who would have thought Starmers team suddenly change their minds?
I'm totally anti-Tory and will almost certainly actually vote Labour just to get the evil people out but anyone on here who blindly assumes Starmer is trustworthy and honest simply because he's not a Tory is living in the land of clouds and cuckoos.
The guy lies, lied to become leader and carries on 'changing his mind because of circumstances'. Oke doke. PR is a necessity.

I keep plugging on about these MPs - they're as bad as each other. No principles at all.

Unless they're either extreme right or left - then they're unelectable (which hopefully stops them being dangerous)

Once again, i tell you that no established political party is good to run the country. We need an economic established consensus to do the mechanics. We all know what that requires.

Any more of this and I'd be convinced that democracy is a waste of time cos the populous balls it up (e.g. brexit)

 

I genuinely dont think they're all as bad as each other. There are some principled people out there. Trouble is the principled ones get mowed down, ridiculed or sidelined simply because they're principled. The shape-shifters and manipulators are the ones that do well in politics because they adapt, lie (like Johnson and Starmer), shout loudly or keep quiet till circumstances suit.

 

There actually is some merit in changing stance on policies. We are in a strange place at the moment where the economy is collapsing like we've never seen before. Things which may have been doable and affordable a year ago are now simply beyond what any new government could do. It's better to under promise and over achieve than con the electorate with stuff they can't actually do.

We definitely do need electoral reform though.

When folks talk about the ‘Overton Window’ - where policies are considered as acceptable and made to get you in power / or keep you in power - the current Labour Party are probably on a par with Cameron and Osborne. There’s not a shift in this lot. I don’t want to scare the horses. Expect little. I’m Labour through and through, but want some controls on privatisation if necessary, especially on rail and utilities. Today just showed that.

 

Dunno what that means really. Might as well say 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious dear boy'

 

How do events stop Labour from say taxing the top 5 % of earners more progressively? Or reinstating DfiD? Or giving votes to EU Citizens? Or joining the SM? Or banning right to buy? Or imposing rent controls? I’m interested to see your working out there.

 

a Labour majority would be an absolute disaster. They are just regurgitating the policies that have driven us into the abyss. The only hope is for a hung parliament and PR where parties to the left such as the LibDems stop the drift right wards

Well I would never have thought that I would have ever hoped for Labour to not win outright but I agree with you. The best thing would be the Tories get hammered and Labour rely on the Libs/SNP to form a govt. Surely then they'd have to bring pr in (which is what Labour members want anyway). I wont hold my breath. Tories may well be back in 6 years.....

I'm also hoping for a hung parliament for the exact same reasons. I'll still be campaigning for Labour on a local level as my seat is ultra-marginal and the incumbent Tory MP is one of the most despicable human beings you could wish to meet. Or not, as getting hold of him is nigh-on impossible. I wrote to him about an issue recently, he ignored my email but I have been mysteriously added to the local Tory mailing list. What an absolute lovely person. But I'm finding the Lib Dems are more aligned with a lot of my views nowadays. However, the priority is to get rid of the Tories, and my constituency is a two-horse race. Splitting the anti-Tory vote would be even more catastrophic.
