Every so often the expression 'He/She's Barnsley through and through' crops up as has happened in the Keith Turner thread. What are the characteristics assigned to someone so they 'qualify' as being 'Barnsley through and through?'
Thick as pigshi.t, inbred and totally insular but calls a spade a spade even if that has racist connotations Edit: I say this as a born and bred Barnsley lad.
I imagine being born, raised and probably dying in Barnsley. My grandad was born and died in Worsbrough Bridge. Only ever lived in 3 houses his entire life, all within 500 yards of each other. Not saying I would recommend it as a lifestyle choice like, but he literally never left Barnsley, outside of holidays and away games.
I'm the same as your Grandfather, mate, with the exception for me being in Dodworth. I've only lived in three houses my entire life.
I lived in the Barnsley district till I was 18 in 1974 and have lived in various places (not including Barnsley) ever since. My dad was born in Sunderland and moved to Thurnscoe when he was 16 in 1936, mum was born and bred in Thurnscoe. I think all this makes me only Barnsley Throu.
Born in Salisbury, (old man was a soldier) then lived in Bradford from the age of 3 to 14, (old man was from Bradford) then moved to my mother's home town of Barnsley and been here ever since, 36 years. And consider misen Barnsley thru and thru,
Barnsley through and through. (Apples to most other places if born or live there) and it's not always owt to do with football. Someone who has pride in the town and is willing to promote it at any opportunity. (Me) Doesnt take kindly to criticism of the town. (Me). (Especially those who know nowt about the place.) Two hats. Although some may leave for pastures new. it doesn't mean they will abandon that identity. So doesnt have to live there to say it. (Mi son) Now adapt it into football. Pretty much the same feelings. Barring the odd criticism lol. Edit and add higgybabys answer to the list.
It's just another meaningless football phrase for the most part isn't it? Same as when managers or players turn up and preach about how special the club and its fans are - despite them never having set foot in the place before.
I wasn’t born in Barnsley and have never lived in the town. However, my dad was and lived the early part of his life in Ward Green. As a boy he was on the books at Oakwell and rode his bike to the home games where he and others would pay an old lady to park it in her garden for her to look after whilst they watched the match. His family had a furniture shop on Sheffield Road and then opened one in Knaresborough (about 3 miles from Harrogate) and relocated there. He then met my mum and settled in Harrogate until he passed in 2001. In the mid 1970’s he took me and my brother to Oakwell and from that day onwards we swore our allegiance to the town and the team. He brought us religiously after that until his bad health would no longer allow him to attend. It would have been much easier to go to Elland Road like my mates but I wasn’t having that and neither were my dad or brother. Since that first match, I’ve probably missed less than 10 home games, have visited 112 different away grounds, had a hamster called Glavin and a cat called McCarthy, split with girlfriends when had a “me or them” choice, left two jobs when my employees wanted me to work Saturdays, have a Toby Tyke tattoo and enough BFC memorabilia for my own museum. During the miners strike, we marched with the Barnsley miners and their families and gave whenever we could. My dad never forgot his roots and was proud of his upbringing, the town and its people. He was certainly Barnsley through and through. I think as myself as an adopted Barnsley lad and reckon I too am “Barnsley through and through”. The question is, am I? Or am I simply deranged?
Sounds like you're Barnsley through and through AND deranged. You also write a lovely spiel about your dad.
I’ve lived in about 20. Could never afford to buy one though. Rent boy til I die. I was born in Chesterfield, know nowt about through & through Barnsley. Know nowt about Chesterfield either. Apart from the architect of the church being a bit pi55ed when he built it..
