Ropergate has gone that way in Pontefract. The Old Bank and Post Office pubs are expensive. Mostly frequented by young'uns. The town seems like it's split down the middle.
Why not? Why don’t people who earn good hard earned money deserve a shop to spend their money in? It’s short sighted views like this why we have a stigma about the town, Barnsley is a great place with great hardworking people so a don’t see why they should have to travel to Leeds Sheffield etc to spend there money
Instead of going to Manchester ,Leeds and S6 for example the people from those cities are now coming to Barnsley for the weekend nightlife.
Some of the lads have seen hen parties already in the soul lounge, when I worked in the town the other week it was connected to the merely reopened Butterfields, they were building a new DJ both and having a top sound system installed in preparation for a weekly resident DJ who plays in Ibiza, If they nail that bar it’ll make the town even more attractive, the interior decor is top notch
I'll be having an afternoon out this Saturday, really looking forward to the new Barnsley and a Town centre to be proud of.
I was going round town in the 60s and 70, it was brilliant then and as far as I’m concerned it’s brilliant now.
It’s about variety/choice/ availability in food and shopping. As mentioned earlier we have cheaper cafe/bars/pubs and more expensive ones. The choice is yours
Every time I walk past flannels there,s never anybody in it.will stick by my original forecast that it won,t be here for long.
The Harewood Arms pub is the only building staying in that row as it’s the oldest building- actually over 100 years old. The rest of the Soviet era shops are going.
I absolutely love the town centre. Yes it still has areas that massively need to improve but Rome wasnt built in a day and the areas that they have done are better than anywhere else in South Yorkshire by a long way. I used to go to barnsley all the time as a kid at weekends because it was the only place I could go really. As an adult I hardly ever went because it was a bit of a **** hole. Since they opened the glassworks I've been more times in this last year or so than I did in the previous 25. Every couple of months I'll go after work. There's sod all open but I actually just enjoy walking around and seeing the place looking nice. Nothing is better than walking round the corner into the glassworks square and seeing people sat on the grass just enjoying themselves, but a close second is seeing people sat in and outside falco lounge and the botanist just having a nice evening out with family or friends and knowing that it's such a safe welcoming environment. Can't wait for the bridge to be open because it looks quite striking. I think if they put some thought into the area around the underpass for harborough hill and move pavements around etc then it could really make getting to and from Oakwell a breeze for pedestrians
In the 50’s and before, Kirkgate was full of pubs so I’m told by an elderly friend whose specialist subject on Mastermind would be “ Wakefield public houses 1950-1980 “
