I would like to see Williams and Cadden sign new contracts as I believe they only have 12 months to go. Other than them, I can’t see us selling anyone else. We have replaced our keeper with someone highly rated. Connell has signed a new deal. Anderson and Thomas will be big misses but i liked the look of Lopata and James against Hull. McCarthy will be a like a new signing. Sounds like we are bringing in four new signings asap. Transfer window doesn’t close while the end of august. I would hope for more from Russell this season. We have some very highly rated young players. Cancelling a couple of friendlies is no big deal if that’s what the coach wants - I’d see it as a positive that the club are backing him. I genuinely can’t see why the meltdown. Connell, Kane and Phillips are a great midfield at this level.
What have you got other than “hear say” to be negative about other than the possible EFL sanction that we have actually brought on ourselves to the EFL? Give me facts on what to be negative about? Other clubs are similar to us with recruitment. We have our manager in place. Ppl now have their season tickets. We’ve signed our best player to a 4/5 year deal. We have so far only let Mads go from the team that finished the season which we all expected anyway. There’s 2 weeks to go yet so give us all some facts on what to be negative about then I may rip my season ticket up as I’m the biggest happy clapper in the Ponty.
Connell signing a new contract. Moved quickly to replace head coach. Kept most of the permeant squad members together that got to the play offs. Brought in a highly rated keeper. Collins signing looks inspired. Four new players coming in soon according to Doug and it’s not end of July yet. Held our own against hull, a solid championship side. Got one of the best midfields in the league. Exciting academy prospects coming through.
Where did we play our last competitive game? Do you know why we played our last competitive game there? It's because we amassed 86 points last season, then so thoroughly out-played the team in 5th that they barely created a chance during 180 minutes+ of the semi-finals. And then in that final we were denied a penalty and had a man sent off, but outplayed the opposition and only lost with the last kick of the game. That's the game we last played. We've kept the vast majority of that side together, replaced the departed keepers and only have to replace Andersen to have just as strong a team as last season, only this time around there'll be no bedding-in period and our better players (Connell (who signed a new contract this summer btw), Phillips and Cadden) are much more in tune with what is required in this league than they were this time last year. I can't remember a previous season where things were in place for an assault on the league title with still a couple of weeks to go before a ball is kicked, and there are undoubtedly still signings to come. Your posts are as close to demented as makes no difference and actually libellous. It's nuts.
Tbf, although the OP has probably taken the glass half empty thing a little too far, I'm struggling to be optimistic about the new season. From cancelled friendlies, season ticket shambles, minimal new signings, EFL sanctions, shambolic home shirt - there isn't much to be happy about. The Connell contract is great news, and I'm pretty happy with our new keeper, but apart from that I'm struggling. Oh, and the Collins interview was OK I guess.
I'm as frustrated as anyone with the total lack of adequate recruitment to date. Our goalkeeping is weaker, our defence significantly weaker and our attack is weaker as things stand. I mean it's simply fact that we don't have a whopping seven of our Wembley squad and have only brought in one (who hasn't played in nearly a year) who could be classed as approaching a credible like for like replacement and that against a context of other L1 teams being absolutely miles further on with recruitment. If Doug's accurate, the players would seem to agree with that too! To some extent I also sense a degree of laissez-faire complacency amongst some posters on here but I don't see that replicated in the wider fan base who are worried that there needs to be rapid progress on recruiting five or six players that are capable of playing at the top end of L1. I think the club sense the need to get on with urgent recruitment to the yawning gaps we have. I just hope they are looking at players of the requisite quality - that is the leap of faith I'm taking before throwing my own toys fully out of the pram - I could end up looking daft but I'm prepared to give them until the end of the month. However, I don't think any of the things you've listed are sticks to beat the present majority ownership with. Indeed, the EFL charges are a result of the current majority ownership trying to address the mess left by Conway and Lee. The cancellations of matches I can understand too, albeit comms around this could have been more efficient, as the pre-season schedule was set for Duff and the new man needed to adjust it to fit the shortened timescale he has to work with.
Good post. This is probably where I am tbh. Hopefully get watters and dallas over line a center back either loan or perm, and if Williams or cadden signed new deals the summer wouldn't look so bad.
What do you propose, marching on Grove Street? The reality is that we will kick off against Port Vale on the 5th of August, we'll win a few, we'll lose a few, we'll draw a few, we'll probably get in play-offs or better, and we'll be reight
Bet you didn't go to Hull. I did and I am feeling positively positive because of what I saw. If what I saw is doom n gloom then bring on armageddon
Too early to call at the minute. Certainly if we start the season with this squad it would be reasonable to question things but there’s still a fair time to go.
