Crazy when Labour were 1/25 to win the seat and still can't. The public hate Ulez and during a cost of living crisis it's going to turn voters against you even more.
Then the Uxbridge public are fu¢king stupid. ULEZ was a Johnson project from his time as Mayor and it was Grant Shapps, then transport minister, who wrote to Sadiq Khan to ask him to expand the ULEZ zones to outer London. What a bunch of dumb cuπts.
It wasn't an ask. It was a case of "you must extend ULEZ as part of the terms of the TFL bailout during Covid". The Tories introduced it, forced the expansion, then blamed Labour for it. Which is quite a common occurrence.
Dress it up whichever way you want, but the Labour Party have missed an easier tap in than Oli Shaw this week.
That is true but it is entirely due to a single policy, which as has been described, was introduced by the previous Tory London Mayor and the expansion enforced by the Tory central government. The Labour candidate should have been louder about who was to blame for it - but in all fairness Sadiq Khan is blamed for a lot in London that he has little influence on.
Yes obviously a vote against Labour that isn’t it, when he turns a massive majority by the previous incumbent into a barely getting over the line!!! you do see things in a stupid way don’t you???
I bet Sunak is hoping that the ULEZ charge will expand to the rest of the UK. The tories will get absolutely spanked at the next general election, but they would probably like that
TBF, last 2-3 times I've been to London you can really notice the difference in air quality from what it used to be like. You don't spend the next fortnight coughing up diesel fumes!
Greg hands on bbc news this morning what an embarrassment' i know the tories have to try putting a bit of gloss on things but dear me' having 20' 000 majorities overturned in 2 then scraping in by less than 500 votes in the other' and all he says is Tory voters chose to stay at home and at least we got to say i told you so to Sadiq khan..
When I worked in Whitehall in the 90s the traffic fumes were absolutely awful and the dust and grime was really bad. Glad to hear it has made a massive improvement.
Labour should have romped home as the main opposition to the party in power. Instead they only won one of three seats available yesterday.
With all due respect I think I prefer Professor Sir John Curtice's analysis of the results to yours (see Times, Guardian).
Well...I am gobsmacked. I actually agree with ya on a political thread. Flippin Eck! Just wait till next time pal!
The right wing press did their stuff in Uxbridge hitting labour with the only stick available to them the ULEZ charge. Sadiq Khan should be much more forceful when pointing out he's implementing a Tory policy because he has no other choice and if had a choice he would do it differently. Kier Starmer should be coming up with a policy that doesn't hit the working man as hard as the current one does to nullify the Tory and right wing presses attack lines.
Not having a go this time Mr Kaht but if that's so then why couldn't Labour make a bigger inroad? The swing in Selby was very big. What's your take?
Well at the end of the day Sadiq is still Labour, isn't he? But I'd have to concede that Sir Keir was somewhat equivocal in the run up to polling day. There is a problem for both parties here in that they have green agenda but the public, whilst sympathetic, doesn't want policies that make them worse off - especially in the middle of a cost of living crisis.
Just to add that the victorious Tory candidate himself admitted (to paraphrase) "it was Sadiq wot lost it!"
Whether it started as a Tory policy or not, it's still the right policy! If that was the reason for Labour's failure to win that seat yesterday, that is incredibly disappointing. But another example of why the Country will never be able to address the Climate emergency. Depressing.
