Really sad news. I remember seeing him play for Birmingham v Ipswich 1974. Just a young rising star. R.I.P. Trevor.
Thing of beauty that, couple of players weren’t they. Makes me feel old Trevor Francis leaving us. RIP Trevor, class endures
Terrific player. He'd have been just as good today. Scored a fantastic goal in a rare England away win to Spain in Sevile. Even the home crowd applauded it. He was also articulate about the game and humble. Sad news indeed.
Gifted player up there with Keegan and Robson in the 70s and 80s decent man , Sorry to here about Bart Williams as well.,
Sorry to be so slow on picking up on this. I was doing a post-grad course in Birmingham from 1970-1971 and went occasionally to watch all the West Midlands teams. Blues were scoring for fun in those days, so I thought it would be good to go and see them play Bolton Wanderers at St. Andrews, as the Trotters were bottom of the second division at the time and I thought we would see a few goals. I wasn't disappointed. Although the front three comprised Trevor Francis, Bob Latchford and Bob Hatton, it was Trevor Francis, just sixteen years old at the time, who caught the eye, scoring ALL FOUR goals in a 4-0 trashing. Memory says that he got two with his head and two with his feet, but my memory might be faulty. What's more, they took him off around the 75 minute mark. He was truly a wonder kid. You would say that it would be great skill if a player received the ball with his back to goal, flicked the ball up onto his thigh and then back to his foot to send it over the defender to chase through. Francis could do that with just the one touch. Back to goal, ball coming, one flick over his own head and over the marking defender and he was so quick (no beer and fags) that he left most defenders catching the breeze as he went by them. He never ceased to thrill and always looked a world class player. Sad to see him go so soon. RIP and thanks for the memories - too few though they were, as I was only in Brum for a year.
