Far less protection from defenders though back then - defenders would have tried to kick lumps out of him. As defenders then we were always told to leave a mark on the attackers in the first 5 minutes or we weren't doing our job properly
I love these conversations about our great players of the past. Glavin for me too. For those of you who are too young to have seen him play, do you remember the goal that Hourihane scored at Nottingham Forest (when the ball came to him 35 yards out and there was a sense of anticipation as he was about to hit it) or indeed the free kick against Leeds in his final game (when there was a similar sense of anticipation as he lined it up) or perhaps either of Hammill's goals at Wembley v Oxford and Millwall when the expectation grew as he moved forward and lined up both shots? Well that was what it was like whenever Ronnie received the ball. The expectation in the crowd grew whenever he had it and the murmur in the crowd increased. I'd be genuinely interested and perhaps a but surprised if anyone who saw him play doesn't think he's the best they've seen. I hope that in the next 10-15 years we might be able to add some more 'greats' to the list to throw into the mix. But...... and I know I might be 'glass half empty' on this ....... I'm doubtful we will.
That's a brilliant explanation. He's pick the ball up in his own half and a murmur started straight away - then off he went - and so did the level of expectation.
My Dad would throw in the Robledo brothers.... sadly well before my time. II started watching 74/75 & Glavin by a country mile.
Neither played more than a handful of games before being sold. Stones mainly played full back & to quote Wiki: Hirst turned professional in 1985 with his local side, Barnsley. His debut season saw him score nine goals in 28 Second Division games. Hardly groundbreaking in a Reds' shirt. Both were really sold before we saw anything much TBH. Not to say they didn't fulfil their potential later. This thread surely is about the best players "in a Barnsley shirt".
