My daughter has a “pay as you go” insurance with Marmalade. She has to top up when she gets to a certain number of miles. It works well for us as she is away at Uni alot of the time.

Both mine passed their tests aged 17/18 and then were fine driving at 21 having barely driven in between. Maybe wait until he actually needs to drive more?

    And Admiral was the cheapest.

Always thought that parking on the drive resulted in a lower premium than on street parking.

Also surprised to find that premiums are lower if two people live in a house rather than just one.

If you get points on your licence you should the Insurance Co know although it wont affect things (if at all) until you renew insurance. (may have posted this before - I was 'flashed' a couple of days before renewing my insurance - told company I had a clean licence - points were dated the date of the offence so unknowingly I had given wrong information to the Insurers so policy was invalid.)

Finally! - with House Insurance if asked if the property has ever had subsidence damage be careful as most Barnsley houses have in the past suffered some degree of subsidence. Mistakenly saying 'No subsidence' because it may have happened a long time ago may invalidate your policy. (Many companies now happy to Insure if no sign of subsidence for 25 years.)

Had two kids who passed young and got insurance. If you can wait a year or so, especially if at university. Even if they haven't been named on a policy, they will be claim free post test which the insurers seem to respond positively to. If they have to/ want to drive (can't blame em really) drive. Buy an old banger for £500 and research insurance groups. What you think should be lower insurance isn't always so. It goes on claim history, cost of repairs if crashed etc. Somebody mentioned a honda jazz. A £1500 honda jazz 1.2 is a group 12e. A £1500 astra 1.4 sxi coupe is two groups cheaper. Put parents with a good record on the policy as named drivers. Whilst it's tempting to fib on a form about main driver/not working etc. Ask yourself if your child could keep it up in a grilling from a gnarled 55 year old ex cop loss adjuster if there is a claim. Finally avoid Go Skippy and anything underwritten by Somerset or Eldon. These are Arron banks companies and I've helped a couple of friends kids take legal action against them as they don't follow the law when it comes to claims-which they don't pay.

is it better for a first time driver to get third party cover or comprehensive cover? of course comprehensive would be better but it's a £500 difference

Stay away from go skippy, one of the cheapest for young drivers, but zero customer service, my son was insured with them, and had terrible service from them after he was hit by another car

From experience, I'll never have anything other than fully comp ever again. I know it's difficult with the cost issue, but it's absolutely worth being fully covered. I'll also never not have breakdown cover again too, because 2 months after I decided not to renew on cost grounds and having a reasonably new and reliable car, guess what happened?

Depends how much their car is worth I suppose.
