There is a recent joke on the made me laugh thread which did make me chuckle. I'm sure many have read it. There was then a post condemning it as inappropriate. I agreed with the sentiment of the critical post even though I'd chuckled. Question is is it ok to tell stereotype jokes, even though one knows them to be stereotype jokes? I've done it myself just for a laugh (obviously) but have always assumed the recipient of my crap joke has understood my non-racist, tolerant background and accepted my joke as a daft slant on an obvious stereotype...perhaps I'm naively misguided. Is a joke funny full stop? Is a joke not a joke in certain circumstances? I may add I am very tolerant in many many respects. Wonder what others think.
well if your not offended thsts good obviously with you being Japanese or is thinking kamikaze pilots are all Japanese a stereotype too?
I used to enjoy Harry and Paul but I suppose the 2023-minded might find/seek offence with some of this:
Always love a good joke but the reality is nearly all jokes are at someone's expense. it's not only race that needs to be considered there's weightist, heightist (tall & short) hairist especially Ginger and a whole host of physical appearance (Nose,Ears etc) that would be offensive. Peter Kay and Victoria Wood championed obsevation humour mostly targeting behaviour but it's difficult not to offend somebody in most jokes...
You'd be offending most of middle aged Yorkshire. I'm a fat, bald so and so. I used to be a lanky streak of piss. How times have changed.
Good point! Should we not use the word 'kamikaze' as a catch all term for dangerous/suicidal missions because it's disrespectful to the original context? Personally I would say no as I would have to change my persona.
The rule for me is if you wouldn’t say it in front of the people it’s having a pop at, then you probably deep down know it’s not right. However we all have different tolerance levels and moral compasses don’t we? If you know someone you know how far you can push it in their company. I have a running joke with a Chinese friend of mine going back to a time when I walked into his shop and it took him a couple of seconds to recognise me, he explained that to him all English men looked the same! I found it hilarious.
I remember a few jokes back int day, no hatred no malice. Just a play on words, I was ill educated or adjusted. Bring em all on with open arms.
I think you're probably right. Jimmy Carr made a holocaust joke last year which I thought at the time was appalling. He completely misjudged his audience. However, I do think I wouldn't have cracked that joke amongst friends. Its thinking about context, company and boundaries for me.
I’ve now just read the joke in question and I think where that one goes wrong is that it is written in a really bad, over the top pretend Chinese accent but the accent isn’t any relevant to the joke. It could have been typed out spelled correctly and the joke would have still made complete sense and been funnier for it.
